  CLUB HISTORY  

The work to form our club started back in February 1987. Club records show there were over 100 founder members who donated $20 each as a start-up fee.

The community spirit within this group of people was the crowning glory that led to the development of the club we have today. Core activities that led to that early development were detailed project plans that included the acquisition of land, physical building, acquiring grants and sponsorship, fundraising, club formation and constitution.

The inaugural meeting that signified the formal creation of Mt Manaia Combined Outdoor Bowling Club was held on 18th October 1989 with the opening day on 9th November the same year.  The establishment of a rural club was a great achievement in terms of planning and community involvement.

The first tournament was the National Mutual Sponsored Christmas Open on 19 December 1989. It was a four’s competition and had 16 teams, a total of 64 players.

Today we are called Mt.Manaia Bowling Club and we are a non-profit club belonging to the New Zealand Charities Commission and affiliated to Bowls New Zealand and Bowls Northland.

The club has an important role in the community and as the population of Whangarei Heads increases we have a real commitment to increase membership at all levels.

Our club is family focused with a culture that welcomes all ages.

Throughout the  year we host non-bowling events in our licensed clubhouse to help with fundraising and support the local community.

Improved health and fitness is well publicised in Northland’s news and our contribution to community sports is key to that.

We are extremely well supported by other northland bowling clubs with our hospitality and above standard green.

We have a committed team of members who all contribute to the running of our busy club and who are keen to work with our sponsors.

Finally we are a non-profit initiative and all monies are ploughed back into the club.
