PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT & ETHICS

As a player in any netball or netball related activity held under the auspices of Riccarton Knights Netball, as a Regional Entity you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any such activity or event:  

1. Play equally hard for yourself and your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you.  

  • Once trainings have been shared it is expected players make a genuine effort to make these and, if this cannot be done, apologies sent through to the coach or manager as soon as possible

2. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another player.  

  • This applies to your own team as well as that you are competing against
  • This includes on social media and other online platforms

3. Control your temper, any verbal abuse or deliberate contact. Abusive behavior is unacceptable. 

4. Play according to the rules of netball and the principles of fair play.  

  • This includes not turning up to games under the influence of alcohol or any other illicit drug

5. Never argue with an umpire. If you are concerned, talk to your coach or captain.  

6. Be a good sport. Cheer all good play from both your team and the opposition.  

7. Appreciate and co-operate with your coach, team mates and officials. There would be no game without them.  

  • If appropriate, in the first instance all concerns should be taken directly to your coach and/or manager
  • Junior/Senior Club Captains are available to support you

8. Take responsibility for your performance on and off the court. 


Anyone failing  to adhere to the Code of Conduct with have their matter brought to the Knights Committee and possible disciplinary actions may be taken.

COACH CODE OF CONDUCT & ETHICS

As a coach appointed by NNZ, a Zone or a Netball Centre you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct as a coach and in any role you hold within NNZ, a Zone or a Netball Centre:

1. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every human being.

  • ​​​​​​​Within the context of the activity, treat everyone equally regardless of sex, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
  • Always assume that there are lesbian, gay and bisexual people in teams and among the coaching and support staff, even if they have chosen not to identify themselves. Make it clear that you will not tolerate anti-gay prejudice or any prejudice based on sexual orientation.

2. Ensure the player's time spent with you is a positive experience  All players are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.

3. Treat each player as an individual.

  • Respect the talent, developmental stage and goals of each individual player.
  • Help each player reach their full potential.

4. Be fair, considerate and honest with players.

5. Be professional in and accept punctuality and responsibility for your actions.

  • Language, manner, preparation and presentation should reflect high standards.
  • Display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport - this includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators.
  • Encourage your players to demonstrate the same qualities.

6. Make a commitment to providing a quality service to your players.

  • Maintain or improve your current coaching accreditation.
  • Seek continual improvement through performance appraisal and ongoing coach education.
  • Provide a training program which is planned and sequential.
  • Maintain appropriate records.

7. Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport  The rules and guidelines of IFNA should be followed.  The New Zealand Sports Drug Agency provides legislation to operate within. CNC/NNZ Players & Coaches Code of Conduct

8. Any physical contact with players should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player's skill development

  • Be careful about which parts of the body are touched – different parts have varying social and sexual connotations. There is a difference between touching limbs and handling the torso. Touching areas close to erogenous zones is less acceptable than touching other parts of the body;
  • Be careful about which part of your body and how much of it is in contact with a player’s body. The perception and experience of another person’s touch and body warmth may become oppressive;
  • Be aware that the quality of the touch conveys different meanings through its duration and firmness. These meanings may or may not be intended;
  • Understand that your intentions and the players interpretations of touching will be influenced by cultural differences and religious implications; by the age, sex and sexual orientation of the player and coach and by their status as able bodied, sick or disabled;
  • Assure players that your actions are at all times unambiguously professional and appreciate the importance of seeking to defuse anxiety and apprehension before touching, by means of a verbal explanation of your intention;
  • Be sensitive to the impact of different degrees of interpersonal proximity and be aware that unnecessary touching may offend.

9. Refrain from any intimate relationship or affair with your players

  • even if the relationship is with the consent of the player you should avoid them, regardless of their age;
  • be aware that players, particularly younger players, may not understand the implications of their behaviour and because of their attachment to you as their coach, may attempt to instigate an intimate relationship. It is important to actively discourage any intimate relationships with players. You are responsible for setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries between yourself and players.

10. Avoid unaccompanied and unobserved activities with persons under 18 years of age, wherever possible

  • This includes not being alone in a room or vehicle with a player

11. Refrain from any form of personal abuse.

  • This includes verbal, physical and emotional abuse;
  • Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards your players from other sources whilst they are in your care.

12. Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards your players

13. Provide a safe environment for training at facilities and in competition.

  • Ensure equipment and facilities meet safety standards.
  • Equipment, rules and the environment need to be appropriate for the age and ability of the players. CNC/NNZ Players & Coaches Code of Conduct

14. Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players

  • Provide a modified training program where appropriate.
  • Allow further participation in training and competition only when appropriate.
  • Seek medical advice when required.
  • Maintain the same interest and support towards sick and injured players.

15. Be a positive role model for netball and players

PARENT/SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT

1. Support the removal of verbal and physical abuse from the game.

2. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue via appropriate channels rather than question the official’s judgement and honesty in public.

  • Any issues should be communicated to the team manager
  • The coach and/or manager will decide on the appropriate course of action

3. Teach players that effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

4. If players are interested, encourage and support them to play. Avoid forcing players to play if reluctant.

  • Encourage attending trainings as a way to connect with their team and coach

5. Players learn by taking risks and making mistakes, encourage and support this.

6. Remember players are involved in netball for their enjoyment not yours.

  • We want our Knights Netball sidelines to be supportive, kind and fun

7. Recognise and value the importance of coaches and other volunteers who give their time and resources to provide netball - they deserve your support. 

  • If you have any issues with your child's coach you should initially speak to them about this in a respectful manner
  • If any issues are unresolved then please contact our Junior/Senior Club Captain

8. Applaud good play by players on both teams.

9. Encourage players to play to the rules of the game and respect umpires’ decisions.
