Ross 780 Association

Lake Rotoiti (NI) 2021

The three day event was held on 4th to 6th February and encountered light shifty winds making sailing conditions difficult for race management and sailors. Two races achieved on day 1 with a lot of time sitting around waiting for wind before being called off. Again on day 2 conditions were similar with three races completed. Day 3 had steadier winds at 7-8knts and four races were completed to finish the series of 9 races (with two results to be dropped). Local boat, Major Tom won the series with 9 points (5 firsts and 2 seconds).

Port Chalmers 2020

This event was hosted by the Port Chalmers Yacht Club in February 2020 prior to the Covid19 lockdown. The weather forecast was for strong winds over 25knts so race organisers ran four races on the first day. Crews sat around the next two days weather watching and kept the clubrooms active. Menace skippered by Richard Hawkins won all four races on day 1 and was declared winner of the National Championship. Although there was only one day of sailing, the event was enjoyable and well organised by the PCYC.

New Plymouth 2019

Four boats entered the 2019 Nationals held by the NPYC in February 2019. Bonkers skippered by Jack Horner held a commanding lead after four races but Comfortably Numb skippered by Sam Cross of Port Chalmers YC finished strongly winning the last five races to become the 2019 National Champion.

Napier Nationals 2018

Fine Entry, skippered by Karl Banks are the new national champions at the Ross 780 Nationals hosted by the Napier Sailing Club on 10 - 13 January 2018.

Lowry Bay Nationals 2017

The Lowry Bay Yacht Club turned on three days of magnificant weather coupled with a superb race organisation to make the 2017 National Championships a pleasure to be part of. Unlike resent past years, there was some close racing with the leading boats jockying for places and the time gap between 1st and last boat in most races reasonably tight. After a slow start, Straight Enz skippered by James Sandel won the event for the third straight year. Rumour has it, the Straight Enz boys had a night on the town after their great win.

New Plymouth Nationals 2016

The Nationals were held in January 2016 inconjuction with the Harley16 Nationals. Light winds over the three days resulted in race delays and course resets and eventually six races were comleted. Thanks to New Plymouth Yacht Club for the enjoyable event, both on and off the water.

Napier Nationals 2015

Seven boats from Wairoa, Napier, Wellington and New Plymouth turned out for the regatta held in great sailing conditions. James Sandall skippering Strait Ends representing the Wairoa Yacht Club produced 7 wins of the 9 race series and backed it up with 2 second places to dominate the regatta. Second place went to the Napier Sailing Club crew of Fine Entry skippered by Karl Banks, third overall went to Muritai Yacht Club skipper Scott Baker in XTsea. The Handicap winner was New Plymouth skipper Wally Eady in Lightfingers.

Bay of Islands Nationals 2014

At the AGM in Plimmerton it was decided to hold the 2014 national at the Bay of Islands sailing week. This is a great opportunity to get boats up there for a bit of cruising over Christmas maybe and then some good racing starting with  registration on the 21st January and racing on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. Links for the notice of race and entry form are under the ‘events’ tab.Plimmerton Nationals 2013These were enjoyed by all, with close racing throughout the fleet, and at the conclusion we were able to hold an annual general meeting, elect officers and generally get a bit more sorted out. Thanks to the Plimmerton Boating Club for putting on a great event. We enjoyed a nice, light day the first day, with Straight Ends and a Lighter Crew doing well, but in the end on the last day Ghost Rain did well in the heavier conditions. It was interesting how quick the swell in Plimmerton builds up once a bit of wind kicks in. The results are posted under the results tab. There are apparently some photo’s floating around somewhere and if someone can email them or provide a link it would be good to upload some of these to the web page.
