Kelly & David Set to Guo from Hopes Cadets Event


Kelly Wu and David Guo, both from Auckland, won the girls and boys titles at the TTNZ Hopes and Cadets Tournament at Gillies Avenue on Sunday.

Both players participated in the Oceania Hopes Challenge in Auckland earlier this year, and are primed to contest the 2016 event in Noumea in early February. ; David will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jonjon Zhao and Nathan Xu, who were both selected for the World Hopes selection after becoming Oceania Champions.

Jaiden Thammavongsa was runner-up in the boys, and Lydia Mercer-Beumelburg in the girls. ; Both also attended the Oceania Hopes Challenge in 2015.

North Shore player, Thomas Khedir beat Yi Xiong Hao for third in the boys, with Waikato';s Aaron Yang in fifth place.

In the girls event, Waikato';s Emily Jin took third from Bay of Plenty';s Marielle Dulangon.

The Boys Cadet event was won 2015 Hopes Champion Nathan Xu, from Alex Mei. ; Ivan Zhou took third from Waitemata';s Abhishek Seth who was a surprise winner over Jim Sha in the quarter-finals.

AIMS semi-finalist, Abbey Daisley from Matamata (Bay of Plenty) took the Cadet Girls title.

Leo Mamedov, with the experience of several tournaments, was too strong in the novice boys, with Daniel Hu runner-up.

Zhehang Yang from Waikato took out a very tight novice girls event from Amy Liang and Minette Whitehead.

Finally, we were very pleased to see a squad of 5 promising players from Otago come all the way up to this event, and Waikato and Bay of Plenty both supplied 6 players, which was great to see.
