COACH DEVELOPMENT - SMALL BLACKS COURSE

What is the Small Blacks Course all about?

This is the entry level for the coaching pathway and focuses on junior Rugby from Under 6 through to Under 13. NZRU policy makes this course compulsory and is to be attended by all coaches and assistant coaches of these age grades. Bay of Plenty Rugby Union insists that two coaches/Managers per team are registered.

Each course is for approximately 90 minutes and includes a small theory section for all coaches followed by a practical session. The interactive practical session will see the group split into the three corresponding grades for Small Black Rugby:

  • NZRU Beginning Rugby: Rippa Rugby Under 6 & Under 7
  • NZRU Learning Rugby: Under 8 to Under 10
  • NZRU Playing Rugby: Under 11 to Under 13

Each course is tailored to give coaches the knowledge and skills required to coach at their respective levels. The course will provide basic principles for coaching skills that are relevant to each age group. At the end of the course coaches will be required to complete a NZRU Coach Registration form as well as receive some free resources including coaching cards and booklets as well as an access card to the NZRU Coaching Toolbox website.
