The Waikato Boys Development Team attended the Taupo Shield on the 16th and17th of April. This was held at the Te Puke Golf Club in the Glorious Bay of Plenty.

The Waikato Team of Luke Madden, Jared Mcevoy, Dominic Letford, Jakob Bird, Deco Pharanhok, Todd Higgs, Oliver Leen, Sam Towers, Oliver Fulton and Seiga Ikemura was one of the youngest ever selected for this event. The boys assembled early at the Waiakto Golf office to recieve their kit and embark on what was for most, their first taste of waikato golf colours.

The team battled away in tough conditions on the first day with a frosty reception to representative golf. As always the championship styled Te Puke Golf Course was in excellent condition however the weather was not playing ball. Heavy rain and howling wind ripped across the course for the entire first round with Dominic Letford being one of our standout performers shooting 76 and earning the right to lead the team in the second round. The second round playing order was decided by the round one scores.

Day two arrived and revealed fantastic golfing conditions. Blue skys were abundant with a gentle breeze about to add a little difficulty. There was once again standout performances in the second round. Todd Higgs, Oliver Leen and Seiga Ikemura all played outstanding rounds in the Handicap Stableford half of the draw. These threee secured the only wins of the day for Waikato but they were very covincing. Oliver winning his group by three points and Seiga winning by a whopping five! Having collected only 7.5 team points after the first round it was great to see the boys bounce back with 11 team points in the second round.

The Te Puke Golf Course was a fantastic venue and a great place for our young team to learn and grow their game. Well done to the Taupo Shield Development team. Good luck for your golf in the future.

The 2017 Team travelled to Omokora Golf Club on the 26th April and competed in the first round of the trinagular event. In good coniditions their was a mixed bag of scoring from the Waikato Team. Scott Law lead the charge with a par round 72 and managed to score 2 points for the team. Joshua Steves also scored 2 points with his 1over par 73. Jakob Bird on debut in the red black and yellow colours shot 78 off his 15 handicap and secured 2 points for the team also. Zane, Leo and Ethan all picked up 1 point each.

After Day 1 it was BOP on top with 13 points, Waikato were 2nd on 9.5 points and North Harbour 3rd with 8.5 points.

On Day 2 the boys didnt play as well as they had hoped. Leo Ko played exceptionally well and picked up 2 points for the team. Joshua Stevens picked up another 2 points with another good round of golf. While Jayden Cleary picked up 1.5 after a strong finish. Robson Tarrant was the only other player to pick up a point which meant North Harbour would jump ahead of Waikato in the overall standings. After Day 2 the standings were as follows:

Bay of Plenty: 24.5

North Harbour: 20

Waikato: 15.5

The Waikato players gained valuable experience in the 2017 event and the Omokora Golf Club proved a good test of golf for our boys. A great trip and we look forward to 2018 where the teams will head to a new venue to take on a new challenge.
