Grant's Braes School Hall re-opening

With a new year starting, term 1 commenced on the 7th January 2026.
We are excited to announce a resumption of our classes on Wednesday nights this year.

Classes offered:

  • 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Beginners Karate (children and parents)
  • 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Beginners Kobudo (weapons) ( children and parents)
  • 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Adult Beginners (Karate/Kobudo)

We will limit the class to 12 individuals/family units, with new intakes each school term.

Fees will be $60 per child (please refer to our fees for family discounts).

The beginner's class goal is to prepare students to join our regular classes in the future with enough knowledge, skill and confidence to participate fully. This may take one term or more.

We are one of the few dojos in Dunedin that offer our students multiple streams of Karate and Kobudo:

  • Traditional Karate - Our style is Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do, a practical style that offers self-defence, improved coordination, body conditioning, fitness and flexibility
  • Traditional Kobudo - Kobudo is the study of Okinawan martial arts weapons, including the bo, sai, tonfa, and nunchaku.
  • Competition Karate - As members of Karate New Zealand and the KNZ Otago/Southland region, we participate in a WKF-style competition.  This competition consists of Kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting).

Students can choose what they want to pursue. Most children prefer competition karate as it offers a looser structure and more fun. Some kids train but do not want to enter a competition, and that's fine. We do not force anyone to do anything they do not want to do. Teens and adults may be interested in one or all three streams we offer.

Great for crosstraining for other sports as Karate is whole body movement - upper/lower body & left/right. Great for building coordination and body awareness.

Kata (forms) is great for gymnasts/dancers or ex-gymnasts/dancers.

Yes, parents can train with their children - there are not many activities that offer this these days.

Calling all future Karate teachers!

We are also looking for reputable members of our community who are interested in teaching Karate and Kobudo in their own suburb/town/cultural community.

We have a huge passion for Okinawan Karate and Kobudo, and want to offer an opportunity for interested individuals to learn and teach in their community or school. Our goal is to make Karate accessible in Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as cultural groups who are currently not served.

Karate for all!

Everyone can do Karate. The best time to start? Now.

Many countries teach Karate in schools, and many European countries have large communities of retirees starting their training in their golden years.

The benefits of Martial Arts training are many and varied, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
