ENGLISH

In English, students study, use, and enjoy language and literature communicated orally, visually, or in writing. English is compulsory up to and including Year 12.

MATHEMATICS

In mathematics, students explore relationships in quantities, space, and data and learn to express these relationships in ways that help them to make sense of the world around them. Mathematics is compulsory up to and including Year 11. Students can then opt to study Calculus, Statistics or Practical Maths in Year 12 and Year 13.

SCIENCE

In science, students explore how both the natural physical world and science itself work so that they can participate as critical, informed, and responsible citizens in a society in which science plays a significant role. All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Science and all Year 11 students are expected to study a course in the sciences. In the Senior school, sciences branch out into Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with Space Science

ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY

In the Arts, students explore, refine, and communicate ideas as they connect thinking, imagination, senses, and feelings to create works and respond to the works of others.

In Technology, students learn to be innovative developers of products and systems and discerning consumers who will make a difference in the world.

Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to experience the Arts & Technology courses offered at KBHS, from Year 10 they can opt into them and create a pathway through to the Senior School.

Arts: offers courses in Painting, Design, Photography, Music, and Drama.

Technology: offers courses in Building & Construction, Engineering Workshop, Automotive Engineering, and Digital Technologies.

COMMERCE

Commerce equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently navigate the world of money, business, and economic decision-making. Financial skills are available from Year 9 to year 13, helping students build strong foundations in budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding how financial choices impact everyday life.

In the senior school, students study Commerce at Year 11, where they develop an understanding of how individuals, businesses, and the wider economy interact. From year 12 and Year 13, students can branch into Accounting and Economics, allowing them to specialise according to their interests and career goals. 

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In Health and Physical Education, students learn about their own well-being, and that of others and society, in health-related and movement contexts.

All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Health & Physical Education. In the Senior School, students can opt to do Health, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, and Sports and Recreation or be invited to study in one of the specialised Basketball and Rugby Academy

LANGUAGES

In learning a language, students learn to communicate in another language and develop their capacity to learn further languages, they will explore different cultures and world views in relation to their own. Te Reo Māori, Samoan, and Tongan are the languages we offer at KBHS.

SOCIAL SCIENCES

In the Social Sciences, students explore how societies work and how they themselves can participate and take action as critical, informed, and responsible citizens.

All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Social Studies. Social Sciences then branch into Geography, History, Media Studies, Legal Studeies, Social Studies, and Tourism in the Senior School.

VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS

Vocational Pathways (VP) are available to Year 12 students and provide new ways to achieve NCEA Level 2 – the foundation for success in further education and the world of work.

The pathways help you see how your learning and achievement will be valued in the ‘real world’ when you look for a job and start your career.

Achieving Vocational Pathways means that you have developed skills and achieved in areas that employers value, and that you have skills and knowledge that are relevant to their industries.

GATEWAY AND PATHWAYS PLANNING

This is a program for Year 12 & Year 13 students which opens the gate between school and the world of work and allows students to gain experience in a local workplace. The focus is to gain workplace industry credits. Topics covered in the classroom include Site Safety, Customer Services, CV writing, Interview Skills, and Personal Career Planning. Students spend one day a week out of school in the workforce, gaining relevant skills and experience.
