Gisborne Herald~August 3, 2016. HARNESSING the Wairoa district’s natural sporting resources is behind the latest offering for adventure-seeking enthusiasts: a scenic mountain bike trek at Mahia. The Mahia bike ride is just one part of major plans to boost adventure and sport in the Wairoa district through the growing momentum of the Adventure Wairoa club.Strength in numbers is the premise behind the club, which brings together representatives from waka ama, rowing, cycling, mountain biking, multisport and triathlon. Its aim is to create a progressive hub for the district’s lower-profile sports. It is early days but the club has already notched up several development wins, including progress towards the building of a new mountain bike park, buying new waka ama equipment and organising several mountain biking excursions.“While the club is still in its infancy, it’s heartening to see clear runs on the board,” said club spokeswoman Tamsyn Morunga.“It was always going to be a challenge to bring together such a variety of codes. We’ve got around this by acknowledging each code equally and creating an environment of support, not competition.“Adventure Wairoa sees the Mahia mountain bike event as a chance to see what the district has to offer and promote a fantastic project.”The Mahia event is planned for Saturday, March 12. Those who take part will be able to traverse 25km of gravel, forestry tracks, farmland and road, terrain usually off-limits to the public. The ride is being organised by Whangawehi Catchment Management Group, with assistance from Adventure Wairoa, and all riders in the region are encouraged to enter and give it a go. Riders of moderate fitness levels are also encouraged to join in.The ride will leave from Mahia Boating and Fishing Club and will take around four hours.
