SPORTS CAPTAINS
The 2026 Captain of Archery is W. Chen
Chen is a committed archer who has been a member of the school’s archery program since his 4th Form. He is recognised by his peers and staff for the disciplined approach he takes to his development in the sport.
He was awarded Archery Colours last year and achieved representative honours in Christchurch during the bi-annual Trans-Tasman Competition against Australia. Domestically, he is currently ranked in the top 16 of the Open 70m Recurve division.
He is a New Zealand Representative in the sport, who is ready to lead the team this year. has
The 2026 Captain of Athletics is L.C.R. Thomson
Thomson has been a member of the school's athletics team since his third form, when he won the 100 m final at the School Athletics Sports.
He is an enthusiastic and dependable member of the team, whose commitment is evident through his contributions and he represents the school with integrity and pride.
In 2024, he went on to claim both the 100 m and 200 m titles at the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships. That same year, he was also the School Intermediate Champion.
More recently, he was a member of the National Champion 4x400 m relay team at National Secondary School Championships last year. During this meeting, he also competed in the 100 m and 4x100 m, providing him with a firm foundation for the 2026 season.
The 2026 Captain of Badminton is M.S.Z. Hui
Hui has been in the Premier Badminton team for the past 2 years.
He was a member of the team, which won the NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships in 2025.
At a representative level he has represented Badminton North Harbour at the New Zealand Junior Team Championships, winning the competition in 2024 and 2025 in his respective age group.
Last year he was the U17 National doubles Champion and was selected for the New Zealand U19 National Squad in 2026.
The 2026 Captain of Basketball is K.I. Papera
Papera is in his third year in the Premier Basketball team.
Through consistency and dedication to the game, he has grown his playing and leadership skills, and is expected to lead with integrity this year.
His experience and composure, particularly under pressure, will be invaluable. At a regional level, Papera is an Auckland Under‑20 representative.
The 2026 Captain of Chess is Q.S.X. Qin
Qin has been a member of the Premier chess team since third form, and this is his third year as captain of chess.
Qin is currently ranked 18th in New Zealand for chess players of all ages, with a FIDE ranking around 2100, and is a candidate master.
He is an enthusiastic chess tactician and shows great leadership in helping improve the level of other players across the school, as he is a FIDE instructor and national arbiter.
Last year Qin represented New Zealand in the FIDE World Cup. He also led the team last year to third in Nationals, after winning the Central Auckland championships.
The 2026 Captain of Cricket is B.S. Lucas
Lucas has been a strong contributor to the 1st XI Cricket team over the past two years as an all-rounder. He has positively influenced with both bat and ball, whilst displaying courage and pride.
The 2026 Captain of Cycling is M.I. Ardern
Ardern has been involved in the cycling programme since his fourth-form year. He has been dedicated to the sport, including both road and track cycling.
He has been a consistent supporter of his teammates and, as a member of the Senior A Premier team, earned third place at nationals.
He has been a mentor to junior riders, willingly sharing his experience in the sport. His positive attitude and tenacity will aid his leadership this year.
The 2026 Captain of Distance Running is X.R. Clark
Clark has been a member of the Distance Squad since his Third Form and has represented the School at numerous events.
He finished 2nd at the School Cross Country in his 5th and and 6th form. At a national level, he was a member of the 6-man team that earned silver medal at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country in 2024 and 2025. He also earned bronze medal as a member of the 6-man team at last year’s New Zealand Secondary School’s Road Race Championships.
He is a respected member of the distance squad who has made incremental progress with his running.
The 2026 Captain of Fencing is O.A. Ardern
Ardern has been involved in fencing since his third form. He competes in both foil and sabre and has proven himself a reliable and valuable team member. This year he will debut in both the Foil and Sabre senior teams.
Ardern represented New Zealand at the Oceania Competition, earning third place, and has also earned regional honours. Ardern’s maturity and experience will aid the sport's development this year.
The 2026 Captain of Football is C.D.P. Parton
Parton is in his second year with the 1st XI, where he plays in the midfield.
He has earned the respect of his peers through his actions and commitment to the team.
He holds himself to the highest of standards and drives these same standards in others, while maintaining strong relationships.
The 2026 Captain of Golf is H.J. Wardale
Wardale has played Golf for the past two years and is a member of the Premier team this year. He has developed his game, steadily reducing his handicap and is currently play off a +1.
Wardale’s calm approach will aid the leadership of the Premier team as ithey work to defend the Auckland Premier Team Title.
The 2026 Captain of Hockey is J.P. Sansom
Sansom has been a committed member of the 1st XI Hockey team for the last 3 years.
As a midfielder, he brings strong game awareness and composure to the team. He has been recognised with representative honours in Counties Manukau and Auckland.
The 2026 Captain of Mountain Biking is W.C. White
White has been a committed member of the mountain biking squad since his third form, frequently travelling great distances to compete at the Schools North Islands and Schools National Champs.
He trains regularly and has consistently shown a high level of skill, which has been reflected in recent results with a 2nd place in the Auckland College Sport Enduro ‘Shredder’ series.
He was also 4th overall at the recent North Island Schools championships in Wellington.
It is unusual to be an ‘all-rounder’, to be competitive in the Cross-Country (he was 6th overall in the Auckland Champs last year), when his love is Enduro and Downhill. This range of skills and fitness will mean he will lead by example across the codes of mountain biking.
This year, he aims to continue to lead by example while continuing to develop his own skills and performance.
The 2026 Captain of Multisport is L.F. Matuschka
Matuschka has been part of the squad since Form 3, and he has achieved podium results through that time.
He brings a positive and supportive attitude to the sport and will be an outstanding role model for what is a young squad this year.
The 2026 Captain of Orienteering is L.M. Cameron
Cameron has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the sport throughout his tenure at the School.
Balancing a range of sporting and academic pursuits, he has demonstrated versatility and discipline. His consistency in approach and determination reflect the qualities that make him an excellent role model for his teammates.
Cameron’s depth of experience and maturity provide a strong foundation for him to lead the team with confidence and composure throughout the season.
The 2026 Captain of Rowing is D. Yu
Yu is an able member of the Rowing squad who has placed in the top boat in his age category for the last three years, culminating in his selection for the Senior Eight last season.
Yu has forged strong relationships and earned the respect of his peers and coaches. He has a calm yet goal-oriented approach on and off the water, and he capably balances his rowing commitments with other aspects of School life.
The 2026 Captain of Rugby is N.J Stanley
Stanley is an experienced midfield back entering his 3rd full season with the 1st XV.
Following his involvement in the 2025 and 2026 Auckland 1A semi-finals, as well as the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Team, he is a player who understands what is required to be successful at this level and the legacy of Grammar Rugby.
The 2026 Captain of Snow Sports is G.R.J. Turner
G.R.J. Turner has represented the School in skiing since his third form. He has competed in the two main events each year: the Auckland Secondary Schools Skiing and the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing Championships.
At every event he has been highly placed. Last year, he was second at the North Island Secondary Schools in his favoured discipline of Giant Slalom which is a technical alpine skiing discipline.
He has to date led from the front and earned the respect of his peers and staff alike.
The 2026 Captain of Squash is C.A. Dunwoodie
This is Dunwoodie’s fourth year in the Premier Squash Team. He is also a member of the Premier Tennis team, which is a measure of his racket skills. He is a durable squash player who has worked tirelessly to improve his skill level and squash grading. He has represented Auckland in regional quadrangular tournaments, and holds an elite grading of B1 on the New Zealand Squash Grading List.
Dunwoodie was captain of squash in 2025 and continues to build on his leadership skills, especially in his support and encouragement of the younger members of the premier team.
The 2026 Captain of Swimming is C.K. Fougere
Fougere has been a member of the Swimming Team since 3rd Form. He is a passionate and dedicated athlete, who’s hard work has been met with many achievements during his time at Grammar.
At this year’s Swimming Sports Fougere won the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle, as well as the 200m Individual Medley to be named the 2026 School Swimming Champion.
Fougere will lead the team at the Central Eastern Zone competition on the 22nd May.
The 2026 Captain of Table Tennis is H.X. Jiang
Jiang has been a member of the Premier team since his Third Form year. He has helped the team achieve Auckland and National titles each year since 2022.
As a New Zealand representative, he is well-regarded locally, nationally and internationally.
He has calm and measured approach and readily to heeds advice. He is a role model to our junior and senior players alike and is determined to retain the Auckland and National Secondary Schools’ Cups this year.
The 2026 Captain of Tennis is L.M. Bland
Bland has been a member of the Premier Tennis team for the past four years. He is a dedicated player who has a positive and tenacious approach to the game.
Bland was the No 1 player in 2025, when the team won the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships. He won the ITF J30 Auckland Singles and Doubles titles last year, and represented New Zealand in Kazakhstan as part of their Junior Davis Cup team.
The 2026 Captain of Touch Rugby is T.W.T. McIntyre
McIntyre has been a member of the Premier team since Form 3. He is a controlling presence in the middle of the field, demonstrating confidence and a strong understanding of the game.
As an effective communicator, McIntyre keeps the defensive line well-connected.
The 2026 Captain of Volleyball is V.H. Hopkinson
Hopkinson has been a skilful member of the Premier team for the past two seasons and will continue to play a pivotal role as a setter. He has shown a distinct willingness to put the team first, making him a valuable teammate on and off the court.
His experience will allow him to lead the team with confidence this season as it builds toward competing in both the North Island and National Championships.
The 2026 Captain of Water Polo is R.S. Glaetzer
Glaetzer is in his second year as a member of the Premier Water Polo team. As a goal keeper, he has played, and will continue to play, a crucial role for the team.
In his position, Glaetzer has strong capabilities, helping players to have confidence in the team’s defence. He is committed to self-improvement and leads by example in his attitude in and around the pool. He has also been recognised through selection in national age grade teams.
Glaetzer combines a hard-working attitude with an empathy for all those around him.
The 2026 Captain of Weightlifting is F.T.M. Duncan
Duncan has been a member of the Weightlifting squad since his third form. He competes in the 71kg category, and has a personal best snatch lift of 57kgs and a clean & jerk best of 73kgs.
He is a steady, composed competitor who trains with dedication, and he has shown a commendable ability to balance his commitment to the sport with that to his academic studies and rugby.
He will compete at the Auckland Secondary Schools competition at Waitakere this weekend, and we wish him well.
The 2026 Captain of Yachting is T.G.E. Pilkington
Pilkington is an experienced and versatile sailor who is in his fifth year with the Premier team, and he has been an integral part of the team’s success to date.
Pilkington’s dedication to training highlights his commitment to the team. He has earned his New Zealand representative badge after competing in both the ILCA Youth Worlds in Los Angeles and the Youth Worlds in Vilamoura, Portugal.
Pilkington also received Colours for Yachting in 2025 as well as the award for Yachtsman of the Year.
