Introduction

Chess continues to thrive at Grammar, with students competing both socially and competitively to refine their opening theory, midgame strategies, and endgame tactics. Key events include the Hamilton Exchange (Junior & Senior team, 4 x students), the Central Auckland Championships (3 teams) and Nationals (Premier team, 4 x students). Notably, Grammar has finished on the podium at Nationals every year since 2003.

In 2025, Our Premier team delivered outstanding performances, winning every round to claim 1st place and qualify for Chess Nationals where they finished in 3rd place. Impressively, Premier C secured 2nd place, and Premier B took 3rd, finishing ahead of strong teams from St Cuthbert’s and ACG Parnell.

Individual honours went to O.S.X. Qin (Best Board 1), G.F.D. Po’e-Tofaeono (Best Board 3), and Z. Lei (Best Board 4).
