WEIGHTLIFTING
Auckland Grammar School has a proud history in this sport, having won many national titles. Lifters must join an approved Olympic Weightlifting Auckland club, so the School has established a partnership with Elevation Weightlifting in Gillies Ave. (Existing lifters may continue to lift with their current club.)
Our foci are
An encouraging environment both in training and in competition: weightlifting isn’t a ‘tribal’ sport and participants are encouraged by members of other clubs during competitions
Gradual improvements based on honing of technique. In young lifters, technique – not kilograms on the bar – is most important. Olympic weightlifting complements team sports that require a combination of power and speed.
Striving for realistic and safe increases in personal bests. Weightlifting is a great sport for individuals to compete against themselves while competing alongside others, overseen by an experienced coach.
Training times can be negotiated with the coaches, but Mon/Wed/Fri mornings are standard at Elevation Weightlifting.
Boys will be required to make their own way to the gym.
Note that weightlifting is year-round, but there is flexibility to work it around other sports codes, and it can complement other codes with its emphasis on technique, balance, and dynamic power.
