Introduction

The School Yachting Team has become one of our most successful sporting codes in recent years, achieving outstanding results at both regional and national levels. The team has proudly claimed the Team Regionals Trophy 2025, Teams Sailing Nationals 2023 and 2024, Interdominion Championship 2024, and the Harken Cup 2024.

Throughout the season, the team competes in a range of regattas that showcase their versatility and skill across multiple sailing classes and race formats.

The season begins with the Auckland Secondary Schools Fleet Racing Regatta at Wakatere Boating Club (Narrow Neck). This event is open to all sailing classes. Schools are ranked based on the combined finishing positions of four yachts sailed across three different classes. Competitors are required to have access to their own boats—either owned or rented—for this regatta.

The Harken Keelboat Nationals Regatta is then contested in small keelboats provided by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron - the same boats used to train some of New Zealand’s top keelboat sailors.

The next event on the calendar is the Auckland Cup Teams Sailing Regatta, which features a team racing format. Each school fields three 420-class yachts that race

If the team qualifies, they will proceed to compete at the Interdominion Regatta, facing off against top Australian crews. New Zealand is proud to host the event in 2026.head-to-head against another school. The team with the lowest total finishing points is declared the winner. Following this is the National Teams Racing Regatta, held during the last week of the Term 1 holidays. Around 30 schools participate, with teams seeded into gold, silver, and bronze fleets based on performance.

If the team qualifies, they will proceed to compete at the Interdominion Regatta, facing off against top Australian crews. New Zealand is proud to host the event in 2026.

Learn to Sail

There is an opportunity for students with no to little experience to learn the sport of Yachting. Students will gain hands-on experience with sailing fundamentals, from rigging to racing, while building confidence and independence on the water. Trainings are held every Thursday at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club from 4 – 7pm commencing Term 1. From this group, students may be selected to join the Teams Sailing squad.

2022 Captain of Yachting Nick Shi first took to an optimist dingy in 2014 despite some initial nerves and he is proud to be captaining a talented squad who have achieved some great individual results this year. He spoke to Headmaster’s Heritage Committee member Jamie Uy de Baron about what is next for him after he graduates at the end of this year – watch the full interview.
