BACKGROUND
AFC originated in mid-2019 when members of the Dunedin Police challenged the Dunedin Muslim community to a friendly game of football. This event saw us recruit members of our community who do not play for any clubs, but are keen football players. Although the team was initially created for this one match only, the brothers were keen to keep training and playing together. Following the match against the Police, more brothers showed interest in joining the training sessions. This led us to the idea of forming an official Football Club to participate in competitive games and to join the football league.
PHILOSPHY & UNIQUE IDENTITY
Al-Huda FC has been formed on six basic principles; development of integration, cohesiveness, sharing, celebrating, kotahitanga (untiy) and Tae ana ki (inclusiveness).
The above is represented by our Club name and logo. Al-Huda, in Arabic means Guidance. And our motto, it is, Through Guidance, we will be United.
The colours of our Club logo have meanings as well; the light blue sky, green land, dark blue ocean and yellow and red inner layers of the earth. These colours also represent people of different race, religion, culture etc., who have immigrated to Aotearoa are standing in solidarity.
The waka represents us as the seafarers, as most of the AFC members immigrated to Aotearoa via ships or airlines. The waka further represents that the Al-Huda FC is on an odyssey, carrying the people of different background to a greater success.
The moon and stars indicate the navigation tool that the seafarers used in the olden days to guide them to their destination. Metaphorically, the stars and moon represent guidance by the almighty god to unity and success of the human race.
Further, as footballers, we not only have to engage and perform or showcase our skills on the football pitch, but have a greater responsibilities and obligation to humanity, and mother nature, i.e. social and environmental responsibility.
PURPOSE
Al-Huda FC is focused to provide opportunities for those to participate in football who feel shy or uncomfortable otherwise to join the rest of the clubs in Dunedin. Al-Huda FC also focuses in integrating everyone from different communities into one, using the language of football. Our club President and Executive committee does not believe in different communities, but one big community as family (whanau). It is a hard task to achieve, but any role we can play to make a small difference, is worth it.
The club is unique in nature and is unlike any other football clubs established within New Zealand. The Al-Huda FC have a very special identity, in our club we have players from different religion, ethnic, race or nationality background. That is not to say that the existing clubs do not cater for that, but because we are community-based club and we take pride in working with our community.
