Where we started

The Aoraki Rugby League came into being in 2016. In early 2016 two individuals both wanting to see rugby league re-established in South Canterbury (New Zealand) after the sport went into recess through the demise of the Timaru Warriors in 2012. The two individuals working autonomously of each other were Nathan Robinson and Steve Mckeown. Both had contacted Southern Zone rugby league looking for assistance in their efforts to re-establish rugby league in South Canterbury. Southern Zone CEO Steve Martin suggested that Nathan and Steve meet and work together for the betterment of rugby league. In March of 2016 the two men meet and began setting out their ideas to promote rugby league in South Canterbury. The idea of the first local club rugby league competition was Nathan Robinson's. If it worked it would be the first local club competition in over 100 years for South Canterbury. Two new incorporated clubs were established and the Ashburton Barbarians were invited to enter a team into the spring competition. The two new clubs would be the Country Cowboys and Timaru Rugby League Outlaws.

The first seasonThe first club game between the Timaru Outlaws and Country Cowboys took place September the 3rd 2016
