Rules for the long Range Rifle events

COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING SECTION
STANDARD LONG RANGE RIFLE FORMAT
FOR ISLAND AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Like the main match events at most CAS matches, competitors enjoy being able to achieve a result which encourages them to continue participating, i.e. the average shooter needs to be considered when it comes to target placement.

The Championships Entry Forms must contain the distances and sizes of targets.

“Long Range” rifle competition is different to main-match rifle competition, with more emphasis placed on precision shooting at longer ranges, with time being a secondary scoring factor.

As the long range events are run as official Side Matches, the time it takes to run must be taken into account.  Adequate time must be allowed for all competitors to complete the event. It will run faster and smoother if sight adjustments can be kept to a minimum.

Once the shooter fires their first scoring shot, they have started.  Like the main match courses, re-shoots are not awarded for ammunition or firearm malfunctions.  Only if there is a range failure, may a re-shoot be considered.

PISTOL CALIBRE-
Only one shooter on the line at once
To be shot standing unsupported.
No slings.
No sighters allowed.

Start position is 10 rounds in tube and action closed – hammer down.
First round chambered on the buzzer.
No coaching permitted during the scoring series.
Match is usually 10 scoring rounds.
Targets should be regular SASS size and well spaced to aid target spotters.
Target order should flow so as to avoid confusion when shooting.
Targets should be set out to a distance of 100 meters if possible.
Scored by number of hits. In the event of a tie, then by time.

Pistol Calibre Long Range Rifle
Most competitors at a match will shoot the Pistol Calibre LRR, so the numbers involved make a sighting series prohibitive. As the rifle used for this match is commonly the shooters Main Match Rifle it is expected that the shooter has a good indication as to where it shoots at a common distance for a pistol calibre target. The use of a Stage range for this event is adequate. The use of a single plate or alternating between two is usually challenge enough.

RIFLE CALIBRE- Only one shooter on the line at once.
To be shot standing unsupported unless stipulated otherwise in the Course of Fire.
No Crossed Sticks unless otherwise stipulated in the Course of Fire.
No slings for support.
Up to 3 sighting shots (including fouling shots) may be fired.
Coaching is permitted during the sighting series.
Match is usually 10 scoring shots
Start position is 4 rounds in tube and action closed – hammer down.
First round chambered on the buzzer.
The other rounds to be loaded off the body when shooter chooses, but with the hammer down on a fired case or an empty chamber.
No coaching permitted during the scoring series.
Targets; a minimum of one regular SASS size target at 100 meters. Match could also include bigger targets i.e.500x500 further out (towards 200 meters).
Scored by number of hits. In the event of a tie, then by time.

Rifle Calibre Long Range Rifle – All that is really required for this event is two steel plates, either one smaller than the other or if both the same size then one is placed further down range to make it visually smaller.  Traditionally the smaller plate has a higher point value than the larger plate. The shooter nominates which plate they are choosing to shoot at. This is to help the spotters.

SINGLE SHOT RIFLE -
Only one shooter on the line at once.
Can be shot from any position i.e. standing or lying and sitting on ground, chair or hay bale.
Crossed Sticks Permitted. No bench-rests.
Up to 3 sighting shots (including fouling shots) may be fired.
Coaching is permitted during the sighting series. Spotters to call shot placement.
Start position is action open – hammer may be cocked, and holding a round.
First round loaded on the buzzer.
Match usually 10 scoring shots.
Shooter to nominate each target being engaged.
Ammunition can be on the body, or placed on the ground.
No coaching permitted during the scoring series.   However; if the first 7 shots are misses the shooter may be assisted by the spotters for the remaining 3 shots.
But any assisted shooter cannot be placed higher that any  unassisted shooter.
Scored by the number of hits.
In the event of a tie, then by time.

Single Shot Rifle Long Range
When shooting the heavy barrelled Single Shot Sharps, Rolling Block Remington Hi Wall or Trapdoor, most shooters use crossed sticks while seated to support the rifle, which is completely in character for the period we are enacting. Some shooters like to rest their elbows on their knees while seated on the ground and not use crossed sticks at all. Others prefer to kneel, another classic shooting position. Make sure at least 90% of shooters can hit 90% of the targets. Must have a good spotting scope or strong binoculars on hand for spotting.

               TARGET RECOMMENDATION

Make sure the targets are shootable. The harder the targets and the more complicated the shooting sequence the longer the event will take and the less fun the shooters will have.  Course design should be so straight-forward that it is impossible for a shooter to get a procedural for incorrectly shooting the match.
Targets are to be freshly painted before the match.
Shooters may ask to have the targets painted again if its visibility becomes a problem.
Standard distance is 200 meters. At this distance 3 targets should be at least 300mmx300mm, 500mmx500mm and 1000mmx1000mm with scores of 20, 10, 5 respectively.
Targets sited in front of an appropriate backstop allow misses to be sighted.
• If circumstances beyond the clubs control de-rail this event, then a match shot on paper would be acceptable. Scoring to be done by measuring group size.
Wind flags are optional.
If distances exceeding 200 meters are available the host club may also offer a ‘fun event’ shoot at a greater distance.

Once the shooter fires their first shot they have started. Like the Main Match Courses          re-shoots are not awarded for ammunition or firearm malfunctions. Only if there is a range failure may a reshoot be considered.

The host club must advertise on the entry form the distance for single shot and rifle calibre long-range events. This would make peoples sighting series less time consuming.
