Archery

A precision sport where blind and low vision athletes use tactile markers and guidance from a sighted guide (agent) to align their shot and aim toward the target.

Overview

Archery is a precision sport where athletes shoot arrows at a target.

Archery for the vision impaired is growing in New Zealand, due to the ongoing work between Blind Sport NZ and Archery NZ to expand opportunities and coach training nationwide.

Key points:

  • Athletes use a tactile sight to help align their shot.
  • Foot locators help maintain consistent positioning
  • A sighted guide (agent) supports alignment, safety, and scoring
  • Verbal feedback helps athletes adjust their aim
  • Arrows are typically shot at a set distance using adapted techniques

Equipment used:

  • Bow and arrows (normally provided at the club)
  • Tactile sight (for aiming, can be custom made or purchased)
  • Foot locators (for positioning)
  • Target and shooting range at the club
  • Support from a guide (agent, a person providing verbal feedback)
