Bowls Hornby as it is currently known, was formed in 1919 situated at the Hornby Domain and was then known as the Paparua Bowling Club. Membership for the first year was recorded as 27. The first President was Julius Caesar who was assisted by a committee of nine. Running water and flushing toilets were non-existant in those days but the club mamaged to get the bowling green and pavillion open for the start of the 1920/21 season. Quite a feat!!!

In 1928 the club changed its name to Bowls Hornby as its location became confused with the Paparua Prison location and players from other city clubs were travelling to the wrong location.

In 1994 the planning of the second green commenced and completed by 1997. Measuring 38.5 x 38.5m it is probably the largest green in Canterbury.

2002 saw major renovations to the club rooms which has been ongoing over the years.
