Think you know every shortcut and hidden corner of this school? Prove it! Join the Burnside Orienteering Club! No previous experience required.
We’re starting a brand-new Orienteering Club, and it’s basically a high-speed, real-life scavenger hunt combined with a cross-country race. Forget boring laps around the field—this is about speed, strategy, and not getting lost.
At this stage Burnside High School only offers information on events you can compete in, however, if there is a lot of interest, there is opportunity to have weekly coaching sessions at a small cost for the year.
There are many awesome events to learn, train and compete in throughout the year.
Orienteering is an adventure/event based sport whereby you use a compass and map to navigate your way around a course from point to point in the fastest time. The maps used are very detailed and usually cover farmland or forest terrain. Typically the courses are 2-5km in distance. It is a bit like doing a cross country run but having to stop and work out where you are and where you are heading along the way.
If you would like to know more and have an interest in orienteering (no previous experience required) complete the form below and Ms Phillips will be in contact with you soon.
For events starting this Tuesday 17th February, please see the information in the link below.
The first sprint event is at Hillmorton High School. You don't have to be competitive, you can simply give it a go. There are many different course lengths/difficulty for you to choose. And someone will be there to offer coaching from 5pm.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about upcoming events please email Ms Phillips or visit the PAPO (Peninsula and Plains Orienteering) links below for a list of all upcoming events.
PAPO OY SERIES
OY Events are a series of 8 competitive events run throughout the year to determine the PAPO Orienteer of the Year. The top 6 events count towards your point total and range from classic orienteering events, to mountain bike orienteering and even night orienteering! There are 12 OY grades to compete in for all skill levels.

PAPO SUMMER SPRINT SERIES
Sprint events are shorter events typically run around urban areas with a focus on speed and quick decision making. A series of 5 evening sprint events held over consecutive Tuesday nights from 5 pm till 6:30 pm starting on the 17th of February. These are always fun and are planned by some of the up and coming club juniors. There are always plenty of PAPO members willing to help anyone new to the sport.
Come along and experience an adventure sport, practice map reading and navigation, and improve your fitness.
