Central Football would like to congratulate GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic on winning the Lotto Central Federation League title for 2022.
Whanganui Athletic wrapped up the league with one match to spare after beating Napier City Rovers 3-2 at Bluewater Stadium in round 13.
At the same time they also secured the right to challenge for a 2023 Central League spot with a two legged play-off against the Capital Premier Champions.
Winning the Federation League was something the club has been working towards and player/coach Matt Calvert is delighted they have achieved this but say’s they are still not content;
“Winning the federation league is a great feeling for our football club. As a management and playing group, we have worked very hard to achieve this title. The club has been striving for this over the last few seasons. A lot of volunteers have worked tremendously hard and they should savour this moment as well.”
“The credit goes to the players. With this being my first campaign as player/coach, the lads have bought into the environment we have created here. They really are a brilliant group of players. It has been a massive team effort and everyone has played their part. “
“We are delighted but not content. We now look forward to the next step in the play-offs. Whoever we come up against, we are committed to the challenge ahead.”
Whanganui finished the season unbeaten with 12 wins and 2 draws.
The Central League play off’s are due to take place in the first two weekends of September. Central Football wish Matt and the Whanganui Athletic side all the best in their endeavour to secure a spot in the 2023 Central League.
