Match of the Round

GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic vs Electrinet Gisborne Thistle

Thistle, fresh off a big win at home last week vs Palmy Marist were on the road to Whanganui for a battle with Athletic. Whanganui have endured a tough campaign and Thistle would have been confident off the back of their win the week prior. However, they came up against a home side more than ready for the match as they went ahead through Charlie Meredith on 22 minutes. Thistle are always good for a goal when Jimmy Somerton is on the field and again it was the case, with the striker levelling seven minutes into the second half. The scores would stay locked for all of five minutes, when the home side had plenty to shout about when Anthony Bell put Athletic ahead. Then it was Athletic stalwart who opened the lead up more, scoring in the 64th minute. Game finished 3-1 to Athletic.
