The Clevedon Game Fishing Club was founded by a group of like-minded fishermen already involved with the local Clevedon Pub Fishing Club. After two years of travelling to the Bay of Islands with around ten trailer boats to compete in the then 'Hotel Association of New Zealand' tournament, it was decided to have the Club incorporated and affiliated to the NZBGFC. The earliest recorded minutes were on 27 July 2001, held at the Clevedon Hotel.
The Committee comprised of Barry Chibnall - President/Treasurer, Mike de Graaf - Secretary, Kevin Moeke - Chairman, Donald Amundsen - Delegate and Dave Mael, Bill Benjamin, Doug Fraser, Mark Wylie, Grahame Boustred and Dale Gutry as Committee. On 12 February 2002 CGFC was accepted as an Incorporated Society and its official standing as a council member began.
The membership quickly grew from the initial crew as locals and fellow game fishers joined up to represent their local area, and from the financial records of 2002 stood at 47 members. Although the Clubs base remains at Hallertau (formerly The Clevedon Hotel) and the nearest waterway the Wairoa River, which is 10km from the Clevedon Flats, and another 60km from any respectable game fishing grounds, membership continues to grow. Recent years has seen membership settle at around 200 with many members fishing the outer Manukau and the east coast from Houhora to Tauranga.
On 23 May 2003 Kerry Dunn presented to the Committee the current format and standing of the Fitzroy One Base Tournament. It was proposed to approach Auckland Sport Fishing, the originators of the tournament, to consider a joint operation as the tournament had been run privately by Kerry and a dedicated few from the Clevedon Cruising Club, for four years. The offer was accepted and plans were laid to restore the tournament to its former glory of Aucklands premier east coast tournament. The 2004 tournament was co-ordinated between the two clubs successfully, but unfortunately ASFC membership decreased to a level where in order for the One Base to continue, Clevedon would be required to assume total control. Following tradition the One Base was held on Anniversary Weekend, but after two years of poor catches a 'trial' date change to mid March was proposed and accepted. The following two years saw a comprehensive improvement of marlin catch and tag rates, so the Committee accepted to adopt the new dates for the ensuing years. With a dedicated pool of both major and minor sposors, the Fitzroy One Base has regained its standing on the tournament calendar.
To benefit members further, a 'Scallop' Festival was introduced in 2007, and a combined 'Kids' and 'Snapper Line Weight' in 2008. These two events have become hugely popular and are currently held on the pristine shores of Pakatoa Island, courtesy of its very obliging owners. Hooks and Hooters, a two day Ladies fishing competition has also been added to the calender which is a very popular event. The Club continues to explore avenues to benefit its members and is a credit to the dedicated volunteers who manage and co-ordinate the club.
