The club was formed in 1897 and has been shooting on the same range since.

The range is located on the property of John & Diny Dermer approximately 2km west of the Cheltenham Hotel on State Highway 54, on the northern side of the road and the entrance is just before the Kiwitea Stream bridge.

Competition distances shot are 300yds, 300m, 500yds and 600yds. There is also a sighting mound at 100yds. The club is operational all year and there is activity on the range most Saturdays with shooting commencing normally at 1pm.
The official club programme is available on the NRANZ Cheltenham web page as well as on this site. This entails in-house competition, interclub competition and various championship matches, importantly a number of Saturdays are reserved for practice where members can experiment with different loads, rifles, sights and other equipment.

It is important to note that the club enforces very strong safety procedures and a ‘Chief Range Officer’ is responsible at all times on the range. These safety procedures apply to all club members, visiting shooters, observer and guests.

Visitors and prospective new members are welcome and the club has a number of rifles available for use, (7.62 cal/0.308), coaching is always available. Persons wishing to use the range for sighting purposes (Saturdays only) are welcome, and this would normally take place before club-shooting activities have started for the day. As we now use only electronic targets, it is very important that visitors accurately know the "zero" of their rifle at short ranges before proceeding to the longer ranges. The microphones and transmitters on the face of the target are reasonably fragile and expensive.

For visitors, the range fees are $10 for the afternoon. The club membership is approximately 25; this includes men and women as well as a number of junior members. There is a very good clubhouse with full kitchen facilities and an area for relaxation. For any additional information please contact:
