Counties Manukau Rowing Club

COUNTIES MANUKAU ROWING CLUB (CMRC)

CMRC is located on the banks of the Waikato River at Mercer (in behind the Service Centre, just off the motorway) and caters for Club, School, Novice and more recently Master rowers (27+)

School Rowing constitutes a major part of CMRC with many local students involved in training.  At present, we have rowers from Rosehill College, ACG Strathallan, Pukekohe High & Te Kauwhata College.  We welcome inquiries or check with your school sports office for more information.

Here at CMRC, we can dispel the myth that rowing is 'all early mornings' as the majority of training is undertaken after school hours and at a respectable time on the weekends.  Training is held at the CMRC Clubrooms on Riverbank Road, Mercer - traveling away from the hustle and bustle of traffic!  Those rowers with tertiary, work, and university commitments are catered for as well and there will be a time to suit you to train!

The rowing season fully commences late September each year with club season concluding with the NZ Rowing Champs in early February, and secondary school students continuing through to March/April (MAADI Cup).

The month of April is usually taken as a rest month prior to commencing winter training.

Between May and September, we are in 'winter training mode' typically on the water at our Mercer based clubrooms on Saturdays and Sundays along with land-based fitness / erg sessions mid-week so it is easy to find a session for those rowers who also undertake a winter sport.  These land-based / erg sessions are usually held at the sports centres at the schools where the CMRC rowers attend and are good to attend to ensure good technique and fitness levels are continued throughout the year.  Rowers that do not attend school can make use of the CMRC club room ergs or a local gym.  Ask a coach for a training program.

TO NOTE ABOUT CMRC

  • Capacity for approx 50 rowers
  • Club Regattas are the first half of the season - OCT - JAN and the yellow / gold strip is worn for all club regattas.  Selected teams will go on to participate at the NZ Rowing Champs in mid-February each year.
  • The latter part of the season is the school rowing season - where rowers will wear their school strip.  Rowers will continue to row out of Counties Manukau Rowing Club for the school season.  This concludes with selected rowers attending MAADI Cup - usually held over the last week of March each year.
  • CMRC provides the opportunity to row sculling skiffs (two oars per rower) - single, double and quads; as well as sweep-oar skiffs (one oar per rower) - pairs, fours, and eights
  • CMRC typically attends Regattas at Lake Pupuke (Milford); Blue Lakes (Rotorua); Waikato River (Mercer); Lake Karapiro (Cambridge) and Lake Ruataniwha (Twizel).  Transportation of the rowboats and equipment is undertaken by CMRC.  Rowers travel to these regattas by carpooling in private cars.
  • We provide opportunities for development through the Auckland Regional Performance Centre (RPC),  Blues Squad, and Light Blues Squad.
  • Our annual Prize Giving recognises achievement, excellence, dedication, and improvement at the conclusion of the rowing season, usually held approx 2 weeks after the MAADI Cup.

As with any sport, rowing requires dedication and commitment, yet offers a great reward and personal and team satisfaction.
