Selwyn Netball Centre Newsletter

Centre Coordinator

As we approach the final few weeks of competition, it's a great time to reflect on the vibrant community spirit we've seen throughout the season. It was fantastic to have all teams gathered at Lincoln on the 27th of July. The courts were buzzing with energy, and we received wonderful feedback about the strong sense of community. A special shout-out goes to our U18 team, who recently competed at Nationals. They represented Selwyn with excellence and high standards, and we couldn't be more proud of their achievements. Well done, team!

As always, we want to maintain a positive and supportive environment for all players, coaches, and spectators. Please remember to exhibit appropriate sideline behaviour and cheer on your teams respectfully. If you have any issues or concerns, follow the correct complaints process outlined on our website. An official complaints form must be filled out within 48 hours of the incident to ensure we can address matters promptly.

The season has been going exceptionally well, and we are excited about the final rounds of competition. Best of luck to all teams in the coming weeks. Let's continue to support each other and enjoy the fantastic sport of netball.

Game Officials

Welcome back from the school holidays.

Luisa Lightfoot has had a successful time in Dunedin at the U18 NNZ Championship tournament, Well done Lu, you have made Selwyn proud.

Many Selwyn Umpires were at the Junior SISS tournament held in the first week of the holidays at Ngā Puna Wai. It was great to see you out there, giving it your best and making us proud. Some of the Selwyn Umpire Coaches also attended the tournament and it was awesome to see relationships between centres strengthening as we worked together to develop umpires.

Thank you to our wonderful umpires who turned up for the Year7/8 PDP. With your help the players and coaches were able to put into practice what they had been learning throughout the week in a fun way. There certainly was a lot of bright colours, tutu and face painting!

Bench Officials: Our bench officials are fast learning the updated version of recording stats etc and we would like to thank you for your commitment in this area. The Senior Whakataetae coming up in September should be a fun experience for those bench officials who will be attending, thank you for representing Selwyn at this tournament, Nikki Ellens, Claire Beattie, Kim Sinclair-Dockerill and Lyn Miles.

As we head into the business end of the season, I thought this would be a good opportunity to remind our community of our values in relation to sideline behaviour. Please remember to keep comments positive on the sideline for both players and umpires. Being a game official is not easy and requires a level of confidence that we are constantly developing. If you have any concerns with the game officials please come and get assistance immediately from a Selwyn Member- We wear the Maroon jackets. We are there to support you, the players, the coaches and game officials.

Community: We are a Centre that is focused on the development of players, coaches and umpires. We rely on each other to have a positive experience.

Enjoyment: Every person who comes to Selwyn Netball Centre is there to enjoy the sport of Netball, through encouragement and positivity.

Respect: We respect all individuals at Selwyn Netball Centre, we support the growth and development of every person. Through our words and actions we show respect at all times.

Integrity: Be accountable for your actions and words.

Field Days Recap: June 23rd

Despite the wet and miserable weather on June 23rd, our seven dedicated teams attended Field Days. The event was marked by pouring rain, leading to a mix of results and several later games being defaulted as teams decided to head home. This day also marked the end of the U16B team's representative season.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to our umpires who attended alongside our teams and braved the challenging weather conditions.

U18A Team's Nationals Performance

The U18A team recently competed at Nationals in Dunedin and proudly secured 27th place out of 38 teams. This is a significant improvement from last year's performance, achieved despite being in a tough pool. It's a commendable end to their season.

Our gratitude goes out to the coaching and management staff who dedicated their week to supporting the team and did a fantastic job.

Upcoming Malvern Tournament: August 4th

We are excited to announce our invitation to Malvern’s tournament on August 4th. We will be sending three teams to compete in the U16, U18, and Senior grades. The U16A team will participate in the U16 grade, using this opportunity as a valuable lead-up to their Forrester Trophy competition against North Canterbury on August 11th.

North Canterbury Competitions: August 11th

On August 11th, both our U16A and Open Senior teams will head to North Canterbury to compete for their respective trophies. The U16A team will vie for the Forrester Trophy, while the Open Senior team aims to bring home the Lindsay Cup.

Let's rally behind our teams and support them as they strive for success in these upcoming competitions!
