NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

12th April 2021

We are not long away from the season beginning! All Nelson College Rugby trials have now been completed and the teams finalised. All parents will be notified soon of which team their son is in, when they will be training and where. A huge thank you to Stephen Caunter, Brent Garratt & Andrew Matthews from the Tasman Referees for giving up their time to referee! Also thanks to our selectors James Marshall, Mel Bosman & Chris Roden for their support in making sure our teams are competitive and fair. Much appreciated.

This year we are introducing our vision, values and our way, and have called it the Nelson College Rugby Way. This is something we envision ALL our players, coaches, managers, parents and spectators to embody. Please see the Nelson College Rugby Way below.

The 1st XV head off on Tuesday for a 4 day preseason trip to Wellington. The 26 boys selected  are really excited and keen to finally get out playing. The first game is against Rongotai College 1st XV kicking off at 12.30pm on Wednesday 14th April. The second against St Pats Silverstream 1st XV on Friday 16th kicking off at 10.50am. If you are in Wellington and want to come along, both games are being played at their respective school grounds.

If your son is in need of Nelson College Rugby shorts and socks, these can be purchased from the uniform shop in store or online. Shorts are $31 and socks $15. Go to https://shop.nelsoncollege.school.nz/.

Injuries are an unfortunate reality for many who play sport. One in particular is concussion. I have posted below the Graduated Return to Play poster from NZ Rugby & ACC. If in the event your son sustains a concussion, can you please follow these guidelines and make sure they are looked after properly. All players aged 19 or under must stand down for at least 23 days. If you want further information, please go to www.rugbysmart.co.nz.

Kind Regards

1ST XV FUNDRAISER

On Saturday the 1st XV team members went out to Waimea Nurseries in Appleby to raise some funds for the season ahead. Ignoring the poor weather conditions, the boys got on with the job along with a few parents. It proved to be a valuable team building exercise also. A huge thank you to Nathan Inch for finding and organising this fundraiser and for hosting the parents & players BBQ afterwards.

NELSON COLLEGE TRIALS 2021

REFEREE COURSE 2021

As part of their Rugby Academy class, 17 boys are doing a Referee Course being delivered by Dave Paterson from the Tasman Rugby Union. As part of the course the boys get to referee at TRU run school tackle tournaments. The first of these was run at Sports Park Motueka last Wednesday where the boys did an outstanding job and represented the school very well. With a professional pathway now available, the hope is that some of these boys will take up refereeing in the future once their playing days are over. In the very least, they will gain empathy for the many referees that give up their time to officiate their games!
