Nelson College has a long and proud rugby history, dating back to 1870 when we played the first game of game ever played in NZ against the Nelson Rugby Football Club.

Over the years we have produced many top players including 23 All Blacks. In recent years, Nelson College have produced some champion teams. In 2019 the 1st XV won the UC Championship, the South Island Final and placed 4th in NZ. In 2021, the 1st XV repeated this success, winning the Miles Toyota Championship, the South Island Final and qualified for the Top 4 competition but unfortunately this was cancelled due to Covid-19. In 2022, our 1st XV won the Miles Toyota Championship again and the annual Quadrangular Tournament for the 4th year running.
