NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

8th June 2021

I hope everyone enjoyed having Queen's Birthday Weekend off Rugby and are ready to get back into playing again! We have teams playing at a range of venues this weekend with 3 heading to Marlborough Boys' College, one to Greenmeadows, Stoke, 2 at home, the 1st XV to Waimea College, and two of our U17 teams playing this Friday night at Jubilee Park under lights!  I hope people get a chance to get out and support the teams and enjoy some good Rugby being played.

On Thursday the Marlborough Boys' College exchange was held both Nelson & Marlborough. The 1st XI Football & Junior Football teams both enjoyed wins away while at home our Basketball, Hockey, U15A & 2nd XV Rugby teams all enjoyed wins.

The U15A team ended up playing at Neale Park due to the poor condition of Broads No.1 and played superbly. Well taken tries to Kobe Brownlee 2, Saumaki Saumaki 3, Harry Inch, Mikey Morrison & Koebi Moser & 5 conversions to Kaelan Grafton saw the team win by 50 - 7.

The 2nd XV also won comfortably in their game 49 - 5. Grant Billcliff (Coach) reported the team played an excellent game with the team keeping good structure and building pressure to create opportunities to score. Some highlights included a kick in a very boggy corner leading to Marlborough making a mistake at their lineout and the 2nds scoring, a 25 metre lineout drive to score, a 40 metre breakaway try to Tayne Hemopo and Fletcher Hewitt-Smart kicking at 100% for the match. Well done team.

The 1st XV unfortunately came unstuck in the final play of their match through an intercept pass to the Marlborough Boys' College winger who ran 70 metres to score the winning try. The result ended 17-20 and Marlborough took with them the Trust Bank Cup and the Whangamoa Trophy. Needless to say, the team will be training hard this week to ensure they get back to winning ways against the Waimea Combined 1st XV at Waimea College kicking off 12.00pm on Saturday. All the best boys! For a full match report click here.

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

With no games over the weekend, there is not much to report however, teams will need to manage Broads this week after more rain fell. It is decidedly wet at the moment and needs special care and hopefully some sunshine to dry it out!

Krugar Griffith (Year 12) got the opportunity to travel to NZ Rugby House in Wellington last Thursday as a representative of the Tasman Youth Advisory Group to a ‘Game Lab’ workshop. He was afforded the chance to speak on behalf of youth to some influential Rugby people including Kendra Cocksedge, Wayne Smith & Tabai Matson on how to improve our community game in New Zealand. The workshop examined current & potential Community Rugby Laws and how we can enhance the experience to keep everyone safe, having fun, and engaged. Well done Krugar and what a fantastic experience!

Here are a few photos from the match between Nelson College U15A & Marlborough Boys' College U15A at Neale Park on Thursday.
