NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

14th June 2021

We are now midway through the year, well into winter and the rain continues to soak our fields. This has meant some thought has had to go into managing our grounds and where teams play. This coming weekend it is great to see our U14 Quinn's team prepared to forgo their home advantage and take their game out to Brigthwater. Thank you to Ant for agreeing to this and it will hopefully mean Broads will be in better condition over the remainder of winter. U17 Kahurangi are also now playing on Thursday 3.30pm on the Front Field which I'm sure the boys will love. Please come along and support them of you can.

The 96th Quadrangular Tournament is approaching fast! This year the event will be held at Christ's College in Christchurch from the 6th - 8th July. Our 1st XV will play Wanganui Collegiate at 11.30am on Tuesday 6th July, with the outcome determining who plays who on the Thursday. If you are in Christchurch at this time, please get along and support our team.

The 1st XV returned to form with a convincing 63-21 win over the Waimea Combined 1st XV at Waimea College on Saturday. The team dominated the first half leading 42-0 at the break before ringing the changes. The nine tries were scored by Nic Sauira 2, Ollie Inch, Wil Thornalley, Reegan Lawton, Joseph Domoni, Jake Burridge, Hunter Leppien & Tylah Blake. Reegan Lawton made 6 conversions and Cooper Grant 3. This Saturday the team play against the Selwyn Combined Schools 1st XV at Lincoln High School kicking off at 11.00am. All the best boys! For a full match report click here.

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

A very successful weekend for most of our teams with 7 wins from 8 games. I attended the Friday night game between the Nelson College Blue & Quinn's teams and the conditions were great with no wind and only a little moisture on the ball. This made for a very competitive game between the two teams and some good tries. Blue came out the victors this time winning 29-12. The teams held an after match function in the Waimea Old Boys' club rooms after the game which was great. Thank you to the Fraine family for hosting us! Much appreciated.

Rugby Academy Update:

The Junior & Senior Rugby classes have been running very well this year with great attendance and commitment to learning at both. In the Senior class, 17 boys have just finished learning how to be a referee along with officiating at two tournaments, one at SportsPark Motueka and the other at Greenmeadows, Stoke. The boys have enjoyed developing their understanding of the game and having the opportunity to apply this. A huge thank you Dave Paterson from the TRU for delivering this to the boys. The boys now start to learning how to coach and will get the opportunity to coach some students from Hampden Street School, Nelson College Prep & Nelson Intermediate School.

The Junior class have also had some great opportunities to learn what it takes to be a professional player in the future. In the last week they had two players from the Western Force team visit and answer questions from them, along with sharing some insights into what it is like to be a professional player. They also had Chris Goodman who runs the Tasman based Crusaders Rugby Academy deliver to them on what the academy offers. These were great opportunities for our young men to ask questions and learn more about Rugby as a potential career for them. Thank you to the Western Force, Tasman Rugby Union and Chris Goodman for giving your time and expertise to our programme.
