Counties Manukau Sport was founded in 1991 by the former Manukau City, Papakura District, and Franklin District Councils, led by then Mayor Sir Barry Curtis. Its creation responded to a strong local need: increasing participation in sport and recreation across south and east Auckland—an area rich in cultural diversity and community pride but facing social, health, education, and economic challenges.
Over the past 26 years, CMS has operated successfully as a charity and sports trust, earning a deep connection with its communities. It has adapted to changes in government structures and strategies while keeping its focus on local needs.
CMS works across a wide range of settings—schools, early childhood centres, clubs, Marae, disability groups, Māori organisations, Local Boards, and businesses—supporting regional sport and physical activity. Its programmes extend beyond sport to promote social and economic development and are funded by central government, local authorities, philanthropic organisations, and national initiatives such as Find Your Field of Dreams and Primary Sport.
Serving a population of 550,000 across multiple Local Boards, Wards, electorates, and communities, CMS places strong emphasis on building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with funders, Regional Sports Trusts, government agencies, and community groups. It is also a respected advocate for equitable access to resources, ensuring that its diverse communities have opportunities often overlooked elsewhere.
CMS is proud of its long-standing role in strengthening community sport and recreation, fostering participation, and delivering programmes that benefit individuals, families, and whānau across Counties Manukau.
