2. Trial Format

The allocated trial start time allows 10 minutes for players to sign in.  Following registration, all participants will undertake a structured warm-up as a group.  Please be prompt.  On the longer Saturday trials, a short break may be called part-way through the trial.

Games will be approximately 10 minutes in length and we will attempt to trial you in every position you have listed on your registration form (up to 3 preferred positions).

During the trials, the selectors will evaluate the individual skill levels, fitness, and technical and tactical playing abilities of each player. The competencies and qualities considered are outlined below.

3. Selection Panel

The Club Captain will convene the selection panel for the trials.

Premier Trials

The selection panel will include appointed coaches/assistant coaches for each Premier Team, at least one independent selector and/or WENC Committee members (where required).

Premier Reserve Trials

The selection panel will include appointed coaches for Premier Reserve Teams, at least one independent selector and/or WENC Committee members (where required).

Senior Teams

The selection panel will include appointed coaches for Senior Teams, at least one independent selector and/or WENC Committee members (where required).

4. Competencies and Qualities Considered

The major criterion for selection will be based on the performance of the player at the appropriate trial.  Selectors will also consider team balance where the 10 -12 best individual players may not provide the best team combination. Ideally, teams should have a variety of combinations to cover such events as sickness, injury, or unavailability during the season.

1. Skill - passing and catching

2. Skill - movement and footwork

3. Physical - conditioning, strength, elevation

4. Technical - individual positional play

5. Tactical - team play, strategy, game smarts

6. Mental - grit, determination.

Other Factors

Consideration may be given to other such factors that the selection panel considers in its sole discretion to be relevant and appropriate to the overall assessment of a particular player. These may include:

  • Positional balance within the squad

  • Succession planning

  • Balance of experience and youth in the group

  • Whether a player's performance and/or contribution has been affected by extenuating circumstances such as illness, injury,  bereavement, parental leave, work/study commitments or similar which have temporarily compromised her form and/or recent contribution.

  • Previous performance within WENC

Selection Panel must submit a list of selected squads/teams to the WENC Committee for ratification prior to final selections being announced.

5. Player-Initiated Withdrawals

a) Withdrawal Prior to Teams Being Named

A player who wishes to withdraw from the trial process and not be considered for selection, must notify the Club in writing via email to eastnetball@gmail.com prior to the official announcement of teams.

Providing written notice ensures selectors can make the necessary adjustments before final teams are confirmed.

b) Withdrawal After Teams Are Named

A player who wishes to withdraw after teams have been announced, must notify the Club in writing via email to eastnetball@gmail.com no later than 21 days prior to the commencement of the season.

In the event of a player withdrawing after selection:

  • Selectors will appoint a suitable replacement from the original pool of  trialists.

  • If no suitable trialist is available for the vacated position. Selectors may invite a replacement player of their choosing, subject to ratification by the WENC Committee.

  • In case of injury, the team coach will consult with the selection panel convenor.

6. Naming of Teams

Teams will be named within one week of the final trial of all Premier, Premier Reserve and Senior grades.  This announcement will be communicated via the WENC website:  https://www.sporty.co.nz/eastnetball as well as on the East Netball Facebook page.

7. Non-Attendance at Trials

Players unable to attend trials for any reason will have their team selection based on availability of positions within the teams, information provided by the coach at the conclusion of the previous season and through consultations with the selectors, the coaches and WENC Committee.

If a player is unable to attend a trial due to injury or illness –

  • Where possible the player will be invited to attend another trial for the same competition, however in a different grade;

  • If this is not possible, the selectors may consider past (only last 12 months) team experience and performance of that player.

If a player is unable to attend a trial due to other reasons -

  • The selectors have the discretion to allow the player to be considered for selection into the team in extraordinary circumstances.  Communication of unavailability for trials must have been provided and approved in advance of the first trial.

  • Written proof of the circumstances may be required in this situation.

  • In this situation, players will be required to follow the same procedures as for illness or injury.

8. Disputes Procedures

Notwithstanding any of the provisions in this Policy, it is acknowledged that when applying the criteria and considerations set out above, there will be, at times, extremely difficult choices to be made which will require the Selection Panel to exercise its discretion and judgement. Providing the Selection Panel has properly considered the criteria and considerations set out in this Policy, and has exercised its discretion and judgement in good faith, then the Selection Panel will have fulfilled all of its obligations under this Policy.

If players feel that they have been selected in a team which is clearly not at their ability level and this is severely impacting on their enjoyment of the game, you can request to have a selection review – this request must be in writing to the WENC Club Captain and sent via post or email: eastnetball@gmail.com

Your complaint will then be discussed by the WENC Committee and a response will be given, in coordination with selectors’ feedback.
