Tena koutou katoa,

The Gisborne Cycling Club Committee has now met to consider the spring programme. There will be various offerings, and we hope that there is something for all.

Twilight series

We will offer a Tuesday twilight racing programme with races of around 30 kilometres in length. The first race will be on Tuesday 8 October at 6 pm, starting at Kirkpatrick Road, Patutahi. The full programme will be available in a week or so.

Whilst numbers have been a bit down over the last summer,  we are hopeful to put on a good series once again. We will deliver this if we all try. In this regard:

-We expressly invite past members and riders to come along again and ride with us. We need you, and we will look after you if you are not as fit as you once were.

- We ask all riders to shoulder tap friends who we know love cycling and inspire them to attend. They don’t have to be a specialist road rider to enjoy the series. Racing will make them stronger and fitter, and this will help with whatever kind of riding they want to do if road racing is not their primary cycling love. Thinking here of MTB, triathlon, tour and gravel riders).  If people want to race on MTB’s or gravel bikes, we will accommodate this. .\

- We will invite members of other clubs (MTB, triathlon) to join us.

-We ask everyone to forward this email/message to those that love cycling.

Weekend rides

Our regular weekend rides will continue.

-Saturdays will see a group leave the Nelson Road cemetery at 1.30, for a 2-to-2.5-hour ride. We will ride as a group on the way out, and return faster, which may mean the group will break up into a faster and slower one.  For those who are interested there will be a beer at The Tav (pub across the road from Gisborne Hospital) at around 4 pm. You can even join that if you don’t ride wit us.

-On Sundays there will be a group ride leaving the My Ride bike shop (corner Roebuck Road and Gladstone Road) for a two hour or so ride.  Most days we will go up the East Coast to Glenroy Road. There will be a coffee at the end at Raglan Roast at around 10.15.

Gravel rides

There are regular gravel rides on Wednesday evenings starting at 5.30 pm from Willy’s Dairy at Ormond Road. These are not organised by the Club, but all riders are welcome. There are also gravel rides during the weekend that Club members often join.  Barry McLoughlin is the prime contact for these rides  (0276627881).

Special Saturday events

We are considering a few special Saturday afternoon events (one or two longer road rides/races, and a possible gravel event) to be held between now and Christmas. We will keep you posted.  We also have a Club message WhatsApp group. Contact Markus Szillat (0210638823) if you want to join this group and be instantly informed about the latest happenings, including effects of weather on the programme, and notices of spontaneous and informal rides.

Annual General Meeting

There will be an AGM at 7 pm on Thursday 3 October 2024 at 24, Diana Avenue. Please attend, and you are welcome to join the Committee and help shape the future of the Club.

Any questions, please contact me.
