TEAMS TRIAL AND SELECTION POLICY DOCUMENT


Hampstead Netball Club is committed to ensuring team selection and trials are conducted fairly and effectively. The aim of this procedure is to ensure team selection and trials are undertaken in the manner and in the best interest of the club and players. The aim of trials is to form teams that have a balanced group of players of similar ability levels across all playing positions. 


 
JUNIOR COMPETITION (Year 7-8) 
 
Team selection is made according to the Netball NZ guidelines and club policies formed as follows: 
 
Year 7&8 teams teams: 
1.        Netball Skills and Ability 
2.        Team Balance and Team Structure 
3.        Game knowledge and General Fitness 

4.        Coachability – ability to take on constructive feedback 
5.        Commitment for Full Netball Season (must disclose availability for season at trials) 


Players must be registered and financial members of Hampstead Netball Club once subscriptions have been set and invoiced. 
 
Recommendations will be made to the Mid-Canterbury Netball Association for appropriate grading of all teams at the time of registering teams. 
 
Players registering late or after trials will be assessed based on team balance and structure of teams previously decided. 
 
Male Players : In accordance with the Netball NZ Guidelines, male players can compete in 
the teams registered in the Junior Levels. 
 
Team Structure 
At the discretion of the committee other teams may be changed where required due to numbers, personal player issues, and skill development. 
 
Normally new players would not be registered mid season unless needed to increase team numbers to make a team viable. 
 
Players in Junior levels may play in their own year levels, however can play up a year if needed and suitable considering skill level. 
 
All players should also have equal court time throughout the fixtured season. 
  

Aim of Team Trials: 
To select the best possible team to win at their level. 




 
YEAR 7/8 TRIALS 

  • Trials will be held. 
  • All prospective players are to attend 
  • A player must give the committee as much notice as possible if they cannot attend a trial/any trials for any reason. 
  • Acceptable valid reasons for not attending a trial/s are at the discretion of the committee. 
  • A wet weather alternative is to be booked for the trials if possible. If not possible, cancellation dates will be advertised. 
  • Umpire/s will be invited. 
  • Selectors: to be chosen by Committee 
  • Team selections are to be carried out by an independent selector(s) nominated by the committee. The selector(s) are given a copy of the coaches debrief of the previous season. 
  • Team selection is to be finalised within one week of the final trial date if possible. 
  • The selector’s decision is final. 

FAILURE TO ATTEND TRIALS a. If a player is unable to attend trials, the player or parent/guardian must notify the selection committee prior to the trial. Placement into a team for this player will be based upon paper selection, and when applicable coach and independent player assessment. All players are strongly encouraged to attend trials as paper selection may result in disappointment.

1. Purpose 

  • To provide players with the opportunity to represent HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  at a level suitable to their ability; to provide opportunities for players to progress through the MCN Centre, MCN Region and Netball NZ development frameworks and to enhance players enjoyment of the game. 

Through the selection of teams; HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  aims to: 

  • Ensure all identified athletes are given an equal opportunity to be considered for a team and provided with skill development opportunities to assist them reach their potential. 
  • Develop best practice management strategies in order to provide a safe environment for athletes and officials to effectively participate in netball. 
  • To ensure all HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  registered players are placed in an appropriate team that will allow them to develop their netball skills and enhance their enjoyment of the game. 
  • HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  does on occasion allow social teams to be pre made, however this must be done prior to trials and submitted by the date that is set out by committee (this is at the discretion of the club from year to year) New players registering for the club will be advised to the Social team contacts if the team does not register enough players for the season before the date set out by the committee.

2. Trial Format 

  • The allocated trial start time allows for up to 30 minutes for players to sign in, register and join the structured warm up. Please be prompt. 
  • On the longer trials a break will be called approximately halfway through the trial 
  • Games will be approximately  8- 10 minutes in length and be controlled by two umpires (where possible we will use MCN umpires but if unavailable capable players may be asked to) 
  • HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  will attempt to trial you in every position you have listed on your registration form (this is up to 2 preferred positions) Players may be asked to trial in a position they have not listed in order to keep the trials going. 
  • During the trials, the selectors will evaluate individual skill levels, fitness and team playing abilities of each player 

The following aspects will be evaluated to determine which team a player is selected for (such as); 

  • Warm up 
  • Fitness 
  • Player combinations 
  • Skills 
  • Coach-ability 
  • Attitude 
  • Leadership 
  • Communication 
  • Team dynamics 
  • Individual player characteristics 

3. Selectors 

  • Team selections are to be carried out by  selector(s) nominated by the committee. One of the selector(s) will have knowledge of the past season. 
  • Team selection is to be finalised within one week of the final trial date if possible 
  • The selector’s decision is final 
  • Selector’s may consult with the upcoming season coaches if required and coach(s) available at selections (If the selectors wish to do this) 
  • NO PLAYERS ARE TO APPROACH ANY SELECTOR(S), however there will be a committee appointed club member(s) who will be the players advocate available at the trial. 


4. Competencies and Qualities considered 

  • The major criterion for selection will be based on the performance of the player at the appropriate trial. Selectors will also consider team balance where the 8-9 best individual players may not provide the best team combination. Ideally teams should have a variety of combinations to cover such events as sickness, injury or unavailability during the season.

  • Selectors may submit a list of selected squads/teams to the HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  Committee for ratification prior to final selections being announced 


5. Player withdrawals 

  • In an event of a player withdrawing after selection; a replacement will be decided with consultation with the selectors and the appropriate coach.  
  • All player have one week/or date advised on the email after the announcement of teams to confirm their place in the team they have been named in. 
  • This must be done via the coach/manager of that team or via the Senior coordinator for the season 
  • This process is to allow replacement player to be found with consultation of the selector(s) 


7. Non-attendance at trials 

  • Players unable to attend the trials for any reason will have their team selection based onavailability of positions within the teams, information provided by the coach at the conclusion of the previous season and through consultations with the selectors, the coaches and HAMPSTEAD NETBALL COMMITTEE 
  • Non-attendance at any of the trials MUST be communicated via the Senior coordinator 
  • If a player is unable to attend a trial due to injury or illness – contact the Senior coordinator 
  • If a player is unable to attend a trial due to other reasons – contact the Senior coordinator 


8. Disputes procedures 

  • Not with standing any of the provisions in this policy; 
  • It is acknowledged that when applying the criteria and considerations set out above, there will be (at times) extremely difficult choices to be made which will require the selection panel to exercise its discretion and judgement. 
  • Providing the selection panel has properly considered the criteria and considerations set out in this policy, and has exercised its discretion and judgement in good faith – then the selection panel will have fulfilled all of its obligations under this policy

To select the best possible team to win at their level 


10. Additional Information 

  • Due to injury (a player is unable to continue for the season), the team coach will consult with the committee for a replacement player 
  • Prior to the commencement of the team trainings, selectors will consult the list of previous trialist and appoint a suitable replacement. If no player of suitable standard in the specific position vacated is identified from the original nomination, selectors may invite a replacement player of their choosing. This player must be ratified by the HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  committee. Otherwise the selectors may choose to hold another trial where this will be announced via HAMPSTEAD NETBALL  facebook page 


  • Where possible the player will be invited to attend another trial for the same competition, however a different grade 
  • If this is not possible, the selectors may consider past (only last twelve months) team experience and performance of that player 
  • The selectors have the discretion to allow the player to be considered for selection into the team in extraordinary circumstances. Communication of unavailability for trials must have been provided and approved in advance of the first trial 
  • Written proof of the circumstances may be required in this situation 
  • Trials will be held on two different days of the week. Dates to suit availability of the selectors volunteering to take on this role. 
  • All players are to attend ALL trials, two minimum 
  • A player must give the Senior coordinator as much notice as possible if they cannot attend a trial for any reason 
  • Acceptable valid reasons for not attending a trial/s are at the discretion of the committee 
  • Trials will be held at EA Networks Centre, the cost of the court hire will be covered by HAMPSTEAD NETBALL COMMITTEE 
  • Umpire/s will be provided with the assistance of MCN, any gaps in umpires will be filled by HAMPSTEAD NETBALL COMMITTEE through capable umpire.  
  • Selectors; a panel of 2-3 selectors, where at least one will have knowledge off previous season(s) players 
  • Team selections are to be carried out by independent selector(s) nominated by the committee. The selector(s) will consult with a committee nominated club member with knowledge of the past season 
  • Team selection is to be finalised within one week of the final trial date if possible, player are asked to confirm their place in the team they are named in within a week of announcement or date deemed appropriate by the committee 
  • The selectors decision is final 
  • Social teams may not be required to trial, BUT this will be at the discretion of the HAMPSTEAD NETBALL COMMITTEE.
