Hataitai Amateur Swimming Club

About Us

The Hataitai Amateur Swimming Club was established in 1908 and was then known as the Hataitai Bathing Club.

From the outset the Club has taught children to swim or swim better, initially from Hataitai Beach on Saturday mornings during the summer.

The Club holds swimming lessons each Friday during the school terms at the Aquadome Complex, Wellington East Girls College, Paterson St. Wellington.

Parents (or Guardians) and the Swimmers become Members of the Club.

New families are welcome throughout the year.

You are invited to visit the Aquadome on any Friday to see if our lessons are right for your child.

Lessons commence at 5.30pm and conclude by 6.50pm.

The Club is an Incorporated Society and a Registered Charity.

Please note:

  • The Club's swimming groups are not based upon age but on current ability in the water.
  • Beginners need to be able to stand comfortably in 1 metre of water and be 5 years of age or older.
  • Swimming groups begin from 5.30pm.
  • Lesson times vary with each group.
  • The first time that you come to the pool please arrive a few minutes before 5.30pm so that our Club Captain can allocate each swimmer to a group.
  • Membership of the Club is normally for one year commencing each March. Families who are currently Members will be invited by email to renew their membership early in February.

The Jim Drummond Memorial Foundation

The Jim Drummond Memorial Foundation has been set up in memory of our late President Jim Drummond QSM. Jim was also a Coach at the Hataitai Amateur Swimming Club (HASC) for over 50 years. Jim taught thousands of Wellington children to swim some of whom went on to represent NZ at Olympic level.

The Jim Drummond Memorial Foundation will gladly receive donations and will accept applications for funding in these circumstances:

  • an HASC swimmer of college age (minimum 2 years as a Member of the HASC) in order to further their swimming career.
  • a Wellington based swimmer/s selected for International Competition.
  • an HASC Coach who wishes to further their swimming related education.

The Foundation Trustees are Bev Aspros (Jim’s Daughter), Life Member Ian McDonald QSM and Club Captain Anne Hare. All enquires to Anne Hare 021 703 193.
