The Hibiscus Petanque Club was initiated in 1994 by 6 players (all of French origin!)
Play first started on the Hibiscus Boating Club carpark in Stanmore Bay and shifted to the Council purpose-built piste situated alongside the Leisure Centre in 1996.
After extensive fund raising and grants, the club created its present terrain alongside the Orewa Bowls Club (at 214 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa), with whom it shares the clubroom and facilities. The terrain itsellf remains part of the Orewa Western Reserve, owned by the Council.
Our excellent terrain is large enough for the club to host regional and national events, with 22 pistes on fine greywacke chip, on a heavy metal base, in two aisles on a level ground. The construction allows good drainage from even heavy showers.
More recently, central aisle shade awnings and seatings have been funded and installed.
