Welcome to HIBS Football
Football holds a prominent place within the HIBS sports programme, representing the largest code by player numbers. We cater to all levels of ability and ambition.
Our aim is for all students who play football at HIBS, irrespective of the level they play at, to enjoy it. We encourage players to play for both school and club teams to avoid having to make 'decisions' and foster their love and enjoyment of the game.
HIBS football teams compete in competitions run by College Sport Wellington (CSW):
CSW Junior for Years 9 and 10
CSW Year 11 for our non-streamed Year 11 team
CSW Youth for Years 11(streamed), 12 and 13
At the competitive end of the scale, the HIBS 1st XI competes for the Trevor Rigby Cup in the CSW Premier Youth Grade (PYG). They play in traditional fixtures, a pre-season Quad tournament in Hamilton, with the goal to qualify for the NZSS National Football Tournament held each year.
The 2nd XI is traditionally a very strong team and plays in the CSW Premier Reserve Grade.
The Junior A side plays for the Vaughn Coveny Cup and takes part in the NZSS National Junior Tournament. They also participate in a pre-season tournament - the Scott Shield - held at Hamilton Boy's High School in April. We are proud winners of the Scott Shield for 2026!
Coaching involves external coaches, staff, parents, and senior students overseen by the Convenor of Football - Mr McGeechan.
General Information
Uniform: HIBS provides team uniforms available from Mrs Duffy in the uniform shop.
Equipment: HIBS provides a matchday bag with game ball, training balls, and first aid kit
Trials: Held in March. Teams are announced via noticeboards for students to view at school.
Season: Terms 2 and 3. Starting Saturday 2nd May 2026. Prem & Prem Reserve Finals 19th August. Grade Finals 22rd August.
Competition: Friday evenings - Premier 1st XI. All other teams/grades on Saturdays – time dependent on grade.
Training: Training varies depending on which team you are selected for. Premier 1st & 2nd XI's - 2 x Training 1 x Game.
Venues: Wellington area schools, including the Kāpiti and Wairarapa regions (depending on the grade).

JULY HOLIDAYS - no games 4, 11 or 18 July for all teams - EXCEPT for Prem and Div 1 Grades (including Jnr Prem and Jnr Div 1) ARE playing 4 and 18 July (we will advise if this changes).
19 August: CSW Boys Prem Youth & Prem Res. Finals
22 August: CSW Boys Grades Finals
31 Aug - 4 Sept : Winter Tournament - NZ Secondary Schools Champs, Boys Premier - Palmerston North
31 Aug - 3 Sept : Winter Tournament - Jnr A Team participate in the Hillsdene Tournament, Tauranga
