YEAR 7 & 8 SPORT

Introduction and Purpose

HIBS Year 7 and 8 Sports Programme is facilitated by Mr Jeremy Field with support from our staff and parent community volunteering time to coach/manage teams.

New students who arrive at HIBS in Year 7 may have participated in sport at both their primary school and in the junior section of their local clubs. The focus of Year 7 and 8 sport at HIBS is still through this club experience for the majority of our students.

The only regular weekly sports HIBS offers at Year 7 and 8 are Basketball, Touch, Water Polo and Underwater Hockey.  The selection of teams for our other codes are for occasional competitions, games and sports exchanges that HIBS runs in conjunction with other intermediate schools.

Cricket, rugby, football, hockey and other sports such as tennis and softball are an example of sports where students may play a number of traditional fixtures in the calendar year. These games are generally played during school time allowing the boys to have pride in playing for their new school and still allowing them to pursue their club sport at the weekend.

We also have both a summer and winter inter-school competition ensuring all boys have the opportunity to participate in team sport.

There is no regular weekend competition that HIBS boys participate in.

Many boys who come to HIBS have excelled in their particular sport at both school and junior club level and we are pleased to have this broad base of talent from which to select our teams. Naturally there will be some disappointment in students not making teams that they may have set their sights on. It is around this time that both students and their parents become aware of the amazing talent base we have representing our school.

Other than attaining success through sport, the values of HIBS DNA will be underpinned through HIBS sport:

H - Honour: Young men of HIBS will honour the school, and its policies through their sporting endeavours.

I - Integrity: Fair Play will be practised by all HIBS men.

B - Belief: Individuals will believe in themselves, and encourage teammates, and other HIBS teams to do so.

S - Service: HIBS sportsmen will endeavour to develop their leadership skills by volunteering their services to the broader HIBS Sport community.

AIMS Games

Each year HIBS may send a number of teams or individual sportsmen to the AIMS Games in Tauranga. AIMS Games are the largest sporting event for intermediate aged children in the southern hemisphere.

Over 14,000 competitors across 27 sports codes and over 430 schools converge in Tauranga over a week. HIBS teams have represented the school with distinction in prior years across Football, Hockey, Basketball, Futsal and a number of individual events including Swimming, Golf, and Cross Country.

HIBS reviews and confirms team entries each year. As a result, a team’s participation one year does not automatically ensure entry the following year. Contact Mr Field (jfield@hibs.school.nz) about participation or visit https://www.nzaimsgames.co.nz/ for information about the event.
