On June 30th 1962 some local people, who were interested in playing bridge decided to form a local Bridge Club in Huntly.  Some of these founders were Mr. & Mrs. M. Banks, Mr. & Mrs. F. Marshall, and Mr. F. Storey.  Players had to learn how to score elsewhere, such as Hamilton Bridge Club.  In 1963 the Huntly Bridge Club officially affiliated with other Bridge Clubs in NZ.

In 1967 Six Centres were formed in NZ and Huntly was in first for the Northern Centre, which was later called Waikato Centre. The main centre for NZ is in Wellington.

Two years later [1969] the Master Point Scheme was introduced where “C” points were allocated to winners and placed members once a week on Club Night as well as tournament results.

The first official Tournament for the Huntly Club was in 1966.  In 1972 Huntly Bridge Club held its first “A” Grade Tournament, which was very successful; in fact 3 pairs had to be balloted out.

In 1979 lessons were started for the novice players with assistance from experience players.  This helped the club to grow and encouraged more club members to join.  We continue to hold lessons when it’s necessary and we are introducing fun nights for novice players.  These are to be called Friday Fun nights and are for people who can’t play on Mondays, learners and anyone else who wants to play some bridge under less formal arrangements.  Some evenings, club members host Bridge Nights, at their homes to practice and have fun.

The first president of the Club was one of the founders Mr. M. Banks.

The local Rugby Club, the local School, and other distinguished establishments were the home bases throughout the years for the Huntly Bridge Club.  Huntly Bridge Club occupies the Ex Tennis Club building, on the Huntly Domain with views of Lake Hakanoa.

Our Bridge Club has 50 active members who play bridge every Monday night from 7.30pm and Wednesdays from 10.15am [introduced in 1967].
