Invercargill Kennington Pony Club

Rallies

A rally is a meeting where all members attend and instruction is given on horsemanship and riding appropriate to the level of the rider.

If you are considering joining our club, you are required to attend at least one of our rallies unmounted for free to begin with unless discussed with our rally coordinator or President. This is so you can have a look around all of the groups and get a feel on how our club works. Please call our president or Rally Co-Ordinator for more information. We welcome all levels of riders, including lead rein at our rallies. Parents/guardians are responsible for leading their child and pony.

All membership forms must be complete before riding.

Our rallies are held every Tuesday night between 6 and 8 PM at the Griffin Equestrian Centre in Sandy Point. There is a $10 ground fee per horse, alternatively you can buy an annual key subscription at the Saddlery Warehouse for $85.

We gather at 6.15pm and you will be told which group you are in, along with any notices. Please allow 20-30 minutes to prepare your pony and get your gear checked in order to start promptly at 6.15pm. If you have any queries about riding groups or instructors please talk to Jodie.

Please ensure your mount has been sufficiently groomed before saddling up. You must have your gear checked before joining your allocated group for instruction. The gear checkers will be available from 6pm onwards. Please get your gear checked as soon as you are ready to ride. Back Protectors are compulsory for riders jumping cross country.

You are encouraged to warm your mount up, allowing lots of space and being courteous of other riders at different abilities. Walk, trot and canter only (no jumping). Walk only around vehicles and spectators. If you feel your mount may be a “kicker” please tie a red ribbon to the tail to warn other riders to give you extra space.

If the weather isn’t suitable for a mounted rally we usually have an unmounted rally instead, you will be advised of this via a post on the Invercargill Kennington Pony Club members only Facebook page. Unmounted rallies usually focus on theory work, or other inside activity.

You are required to confirm your attendance to each week's rally by Monday afternoon. Our Rally Co-ordinator puts a post up on the members only Facebook page prior to this asking for confirmation. It is very important that you do this as it enables us to arrange instructors and riding groups.

Riders are asked to respect their instructors at all times. If riders arrive late please have you gear checked, then wait alongside your lesson until invited to join in and apologize to your instructor. If you know you will be late, please let us know.

During instruction, please keep chitchat with other riders to a minimum so you can concentrate on your lesson. On the completion of your lesson, it is always nice to thank your instructor.

It is also important that parents and caregivers support our Instructors by encouraging riders to listen and allowing them to give their instructors their full attention.

During mounted rallies, all riders are to be under instruction and only one mount may be ridden during the rally.

Riders will be dismissed by their instructor at the end of the rally and are expected to dismount to dis-mount and un-tack their mounts at this time. If there is any reason that a rider wishes to continue riding, they must ask permission from the instructor before doing so.

If this takes place, or the rider wishes to school additional ponies this may be done between 5 and 6pm or after the rally. Those riding must be under parent supervision at all times. Adult riders accept responsibility for personal liability.

National ruling stipulates that all members must have participated in at least 5 working rallies to be eligible to sit certificates and compete in a representative competition. 3 of the 5 must be on the mount entered for the certificate or competition.
