THE KALAHARIS - Cruiser Motor

The Kalaharis are a group of gentlemen and their partners (female!) who get together to ride cruiser motorcycles around NZ. They come from Kerikeri, Auckland, Pukekohe, Paekakariki, Palmerston North and Wanganui (base). Two of the ladies have their own bikes.  Bikes are mainly Jap 1500cc and some smaller cruisers, but we have had a Spyder (we tried to hide it in the middle) and have had Harleys - none at present.

We are mainly self employed or run small businesses, but have a couple of corporate types.

Ages range from 50 to mid 70's - that's the blokes. Apparently all the pillion ladies are under 30!

We usually tour the South Island each year, and we do several North Island trips - to anywhere that deserves us. We've used tents, camping ground cabins, motels, backpackers, and holiday homes. We've also crashed on friends. I have promised them yes, they can sleep under a bridge next trip.

Any sportsbike friends who come with us have to ride 5 miles behind and come in after dark! That's not a rule; it's a requirement. We have only one rule - there will be no other rules!

Trip 5-8 October 2012 was riding up the East Coast, staying in motels at Napier, Hicks Bay and Rotorua - see photos.  Next were a South Island trip crossing 20 February 2013, and East Cape the other way Nov 2014 (12 people). If you are interested in riding with us, are good for a laugh, can play a reasonable game of cards, do a cryptic and aren't a drunk, civil servant or school teacher, have a look at the photos - you might change your mind! If you don't, send me an email. I'll email you a couple of write ups of previous trips. Still keen? You're in.

Anyone for the South Island in early October? Kalahari gathering at Ongare Pt near Katikati early November - good roads and interesting shops for the pillion ladies. You will NOT leave her behind!

The name "Kalaharis"?  A few mates and I used to kayak rivers around NZ as the Kalahari Kayak Klub.  I continued using the name when the bike guys got together.

Oh, by the way......lucky you.....once you have ridden with us you are permitted to buy a floral waistcoat to wear on official occasions. There are many of these.
