Hawke's Bay Rugby is delighted to announce that dynamic outside back Bailyn Sullivan will return home to represent the Magpies in the 2026 National Provincial Championship (NPC).
The Hawke's Bay product will link up with younger brother Zarn, with the pair set to represent the Magpies together for the first time.
Sullivan returns to Hawke's Bay after an impressive stint with Waikato, where he has made 81 appearances since debuting as an 18-year-old in 2017. The versatile back has also enjoyed a successful Super Rugby career, representing both the Hurricanes and Chiefs and has proudly represented the Māori All Black.
The 27-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Magpies, having established himself as one of the most consistent outside backs in New Zealand provincial rugby over the past decade.
Speaking about his return to Hawke's Bay, Sullivan said: ‘’Really excited about coming back home to wear the black and white hoops for the first time since under 16s, it has always been a dream to return and represent my home province”
“And I can’t wait to play with Zarn in a full campaign of footy. It’s has been a long time coming but can finally play alongside him for the Magpies and to be coached by one of my high school idols Sam (McNicol)”
Magpies Assistant Coach Sam McNicol said Sullivan's return would provide a significant boost to the squad.
"It's fantastic having Bailyn returning home to Hawke's Bay for the 2026 season. We know Bailyn is an outstanding rugby player but, more importantly, a quality human who will add a great deal to our environment. We're excited about the impact he can have on our squad."
Hawke’s Bay Rugby CEO Jay Campbell added ‘’We're stoked to welcome Bailyn home to the Bay. He is a proven matchwinner at provincial and super level and will bring invaluable experience and leadership to our environment. Just as importantly, he is a proud Hawke's Bay man, and having the opportunity to see him return home and play alongside Zarn in front of whanau and friends is something that will resonate strongly with our rugby community’’
Sullivan becomes the first new signing announced for the 2026 Magpies. Further squad announcements, including returning players and additional signings, will be made over the coming month.
The full 2026 Hawke's Bay Magpies NPC squad will be announced on Thursday, 23 July, with the club's season launch.
