You may now be aware that the CCC consultation process is open regarding a ground lease application for the Netsal Sports Centre proposed to be built on land at Ngà Puna Wai sports hub. Ngà Puna Wai has been identified as an ideal location to accommodate a multi-court indoor facility for use by Christchurch Netball and Mainland Football (to deliver Futsal).

Location within an existing sporting hub will mean convenient and easy access for athletes, spectators and the public and will complement the existing sporting activities already located at Ngà Puna Wai.

There is an identified need for additional indoor court space in greater Christchurch and currently both Netball and Futsal are unable to be fully accommodated in the existing network of facilities.  In NZ, in particular the South Island, there has seen a significant shift of netball moving from an outdoor to an indoor game played at various times and days of the week.  CNC is the only major centre in the South Island to be playing the majority of games outdoors.

Futsal is currently being played in multiple venues in and around Christchurch and the lack of available facilities has severely limited the growth of the game in the city.  Futsal is a rapidly growing sport in NZ across all age groups and levels, ethnic groups, male and female participants, and it is known that participation rates in both Dunedin and Wellington are significantly higher than in Christchurch due to availability of suitable indoor facilities.

Netsal Sports Centre Limited will own and operate the sports centre and will employ and/or contract staff to manage, operate and promote use of the facility.  Netball will relocate to the new Centre and together with Futsal will be principal users of the 10 court facility, however the centre will also be available to other users at lower use times/days in order to maximise overall utilisation of the facility.   Demand is likely to remain high during peak times (3.00pm – 10.00pm weekdays) and (8.00am – 7.00pm weekend days).

We would welcome submissions in support of the proposal from you and this can be done via ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay and are received up until 5pm Monday 6 April 2020.  Should you have any questions or concerns or require additional information prior to making a submission please do not hesitate to contact either.
