Joining our Club: Q&A

Are your teams mixed? Yes! Our teams from Year 1 - Year 8 are mixed.

What grade should my child play in? It all depends on their school year grouping not D.O.B., so all EBOP rugby clubs run on the system where what school year your child is at school is the team they will be place in. Eg. my child is year 4 at James St school therefore will play in our year 4 team. Any Year 0 children are also very welcome to join our year1 rippa team.

Do the rippa (year 1/2) players need to wear mouth guards? Yes! Players in all age grades from Year 1 - Year 8 need to wear mouthguards for training and games. This creates/starts great habits for future years ahead.

What boots do our tamariki need to wear? Players need to wear rugby boots with plastic sprigs. We have a 'boot swap' box for whānau to pass on outgrown boots - and swap for another pair.

What uniforms are needed? All teams have playing jerseys which are given to players before games and collected afterwards for cleaning (managed by teams). Players need to purchase shorts and socks which can be ordered through team managers and purchased online.

How much are player subs? Our subs remain at $30 per player for the season. We want learning and playing rugby, making great friends and all the amazing team and individual growth from playing rugby to be as accessible as possible. Did you know that financial support is available via kura/schools (ask at your child's school office) or the Variety Club?

How can parents and whānau also get involved? We love and appreciate when busy parents and whānau give more time to get involved. It might be supporting coaches at training, or baking/cooking for a fundraising sausage sizzle, helping with a fundraising event, joining our JAB Committee (we meet monthly during the season and work together to make it an awesome experience for our tamariki), being the sideline First Aid expert and more...

My business/workplace is keen to support kids' sports - can we sponsor? Yes! Support from local businesses make a huge differenc eto our junior rugby teams - from equipment to subsidising shorts and socks to making playing rugby more accessible. Please email maristwhakatane@gmail.com to chat about sponsorship partnerships and opportunities.

Who are your coaches?  We have a fabulous team of volunteer coaches and managers at Marist - scroll down on our home page to find our team coaches, their contact number and team training days.
