Yesterday morning, Year 7 and 8 netball players from Marsden Edge and Mene were up bright and early before sunrise for a surprise training session with special guest Ine-Mari Venter.
The teams had been told a rugby player would be attending, so there was plenty of excitement - and even more surprise - when Ine-Marí Venter walked into the gym instead.
Originally from South Africa, Ine-Marí is a shooter who has represented the South Africa Spar Proteas in international series and played in national leagues in England (Mavericks), Australia (Vixens and Firebirds), and now New Zealand for the Te Wānanga o Raukawa Pulse.
During the session, players worked on strong attacking movements before putting their skills into practice in game scenarios under defensive pressure. The morning finished with a shooting game led by Ine-Marí, which quickly became a highlight for many of the players and brought plenty of smiles and laughter around the gym.
Throughout the session, Ine-Marí encouraged the girls to focus on doing the basics well and enjoying the game - an important reminder that strong fundamentals and a positive attitude are at the heart of good netball.
For the players, it was a memorable and fun experience, and a wonderful opportunity to spend time learning from someone who also shares a love for the game.
