The club regularly enters teams in the combined Mid Canterbury/Ellesmere / North Canterbury Competition and Mid Canterbury age-grade competitions. The Methven Senior team  won the Watters Cup in 2008and 2010, the premier provincial trophy, also the CBS "Positive Play Award" and coaches Craig Carter and John Maw won Open Grade "Coaches of the Year". The Senior Bs in 2008 won the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy, the Centennial Mug, the 2nd Grade Mug, and the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup. Lower grades have always fared well in the provincial competitions over the past century. In 2008 the Methven Rugby Football Club was named Mid Canterbury rugby "Club of the Year".

Individual club members have achieved highly with Ted McKenzie (1930s), Alan McLeod, Bill Maw, Ray Ashworth (all 1940s), Kevin Murphy (1953), Stan Goodwin (1958/9) all selected as All Black triallists. Clem Mellish (1936), Paul Williams (1976), Lee McDonald and Gary Waterreus playing for the NZ Maoris, Stan Goodwin (1955), Barry Molloy and Lee McDonald were selected Junior All Blacks, while John Greenslade and Murray McLeod (1986) were South Island Representatives. In recent times seven young Methven club members have attained South Island age grade representation.

The Methven Club provides seven senior representative players, on average, to the Mid Canterbury team, and club players have consistently represented Mid Canterbury at all age-grade levels. Methven club members have also regularly stepped up to representative administrator, coach, selector and manager positions.
