Marist St Michael’s Rugby & Sports Club Inc

February Newsletter

Presidents Paragraph

Happy 2022 to all our fantastic members.

Absolutely unbelievable how quick that break came and went and here we are back in the real world.

It was asked at the AGM if regular Newsletters could be put out to our vast community, I asked the question, with our ever-dwindling number of hands up, whom will do it?

One of our Fantastic Funding Co-ordinators Anne Norton put the motion under her wing & here we are.  Huge thanks from us all for this Anne as much awaited and wanted by many.

Below you will read some of the amazing things we have ticked off with more to come, our funding team is second to none and huge thanks to our Sponsors (Below) and small handful of Guys behind the scenes doing the graft to make your Club the envy of many other. Efforts from them are above the call of duty for sure!!  (TT, Foxy & Kels)

This could not be a modern newsletter without the mention of Covid, which has affected our income significantly. However, we are a smart bunch here in the Committee (Committee listed below) & have managed very well in my opinion, however, keep your eye & wallet out for the membership bits below to help do your part.

If you’re a player, best of luck for your respective season & great to see you playing for a truly awesome Club.  To all supporters see you soon for a refreshment or two. To our old members get off your butt and come down and have a beer and a yak. To new members, you & your family are more than welcome & we certainly look forward to meeting you.

Keep Safe & see you all soon

Funding:

We would like to acknowledge Lion Foundation, Grassroots Trust, One Foundation, Pub Charity for their  generous support

To bring everyone up to date of what improvements have been done recently at the Club

Kitchen – We were very fortunate to receive funding through Lion Foundation to completely renovate the kitchen area. A huge thank you to Tony, Kelly, Pedersen Homes and Plumbing Connex for the work they all did to accomplish this massive task. The new Kitchen area has proved invaluable to the caterers who use this for home games and functions held at the Club, with a commercial stove and dishwasher.

New Roof – We secured funding through Grassroots Trust to replace the iron roof on the Clubrooms also a new colour (new denim blue) a huge improvement, thank you to Amalgamated Roofing.

With the new roof also came the painting of the Clubrooms building with a new colour, this looks very smart and modernised the look of the building.

The new garden surrounds, the digging out of old plants and a general tidy up around the front of the building, again a big thank you to Foxy, TT, Kelly, Tania, and Anne for the many hours of hard graft.

Changing Rooms – A big thank you to KLC for supplying the timber for the outside front of the changing rooms and to Foxy, TT and Kelly for the work you are doing, a massive, improved look to a very tired looking building.  This is still a work in progress.  The new renovated Referee’s room was completed last Season.

Gazebos - We secured funding through One Foundation for two new Gazebo’s which will be great exposure and shelter on the not so good weather days for Marist St Michaels at games throughout the season.

Playing Uniforms – We have this season secured funding for playing uniforms through Pub Charity, it is great to see all the uniforms looking the same now and can be recognised over the different codes representing Marist St Michaels.

Ladies Toilets - We secured funding from One Foundation for the renovation of the Ladies Toilets at the Clubrooms, this is work in progress and is expected to be completed in the next two weeks,  a big thank you to Foxy, TT, Kels, Platinum Homes and Sean de Farias Plumbing.

Senior A Rugby 2022

Firstly, I would like to start by congratulating and thanking Mike and David Lewis for their success with Marist Rugby for the past 6 years. On application, I (Craig Hodge - Hodgie) was appointed Head Coach for the 2022 Season and I am looking forward to the ups and battling through the downs that grassroots club rugby has to offer. Stephen Murray (Popo) has been appointed Assistant Coach and between us we will endeavour to improve Marist St Michaels Rugby from here.

After a positive meeting with the playing group at the end of the 2021, things are looking bright. Some new initiatives including a changing room upgrade, an alliance with uniform providers Kukri and a shift in culture and operations within the team were all on the cards.

As the pre-season training has started, players have come back after a long hot summer with a lot of work to do and we are well underway having started every Tuesday and Thursdays with Sunday Sessions being an optional extra since the 18th of January.

Our first game is on Saturday 5th March, Marist vs Paeroa,  this is a pre-season game which will lead us into the Spillane Tournament which will be held the following weekend in Taupo. Unfortunately, we have just heard today (9/2/22)  that this has been cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

The 19th of March will see our first competition game in the Local Competition kicking things off against Kahukura.

We can always do with more players, so if you know anyone who is keen then by all means send them along to the Tuesday, Thursday trainings, we are a very welcoming group

We look forward to your support through the 2022 season

If you would like to be a warm-up Tee Sponsor, we are looking for $2000 to buy the shirts which will have your company name on it and will be on show every week throughout the season. Please let me know ASAP by calling me on 0212771668. Thank you

Nga mihi

Netball

2021 saw Netball have an uninterrupted season unlike other codes, which was fantastic but did see restrictions on numbers down at the courts.  That didn’t stop our teams having a great season albeit without their usual spectators cheering the teams on.

We had two teams this year Storm (competitive) and Misfits (Social).  All our players, coaches, managers, and umpires did the club proud, and we came away with a banner round joint win for Storm and a win in the competition round for the Misfits.  Both teams showed determination and passion throughout the season and did Marist proud.

The 2022 Muster is being held on the 16th February at our courts and we welcome any newbies to come down and be welcome into the Marist family

Events

2021 saw the Marist clubrooms being held for multiple events such as birthdays and weddings, unfortunately some were cancelled due to the interruption of Covid.

2022 has started strong with a heap of bookings already.  Hiring of the clubrooms consists of full modern kitchen, well stocked bar, cleaning of clubrooms included and a courtesy van to get guests home safely.  Member and non-member rates apply, so get in quick if you are looking for a venue.  Contact Erin Ph: 027 311 3779

Training for the 2022 season will be starting in March or April so anyone interested in playing for Marist St Michael’s Hockey this season contact Michelle Ph: 027 767 7446
