Club History
Nelson Park Tennis Club has been catering to the tennis needs of the Napier public since 1932. The Nelson Park Recreation Area was established in the early 1900's, providing a large oval available to the public for circket and recreation. The 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed a large part of Napier. Local residents were housed in emergency shelters that were erected on the Nelson Park Oval while town and residential rebuilding took place.
After rebuilding was complete, residents arranged with the city council to start a new six court tennis centre within the grounds of Nelson Park. The clubhouse started as a pavilion complete with a tea kiosk and toilet facilities for tennis, cricket and other park visitors. By the 1960's the cricketer's developed their own facilities and the Nelson Park Pavilion became walled.
Through later fundraising in the 1980's the pavilion became the existing tennis clubhouse, complete with a front deck overlooking the courts.
