TEAM NAME DESCRIPTION AND MEANINGS

Kākāpō Yr1/Yr2 4v4 Format

Also known as the owl parrot, is a large flightless bird and nocturnal.

Chosen not only because they are a beautiful bird but this age group play at night and have not yet grown their wings, as they are entering netball for the first time.

Takahē Yr3/Yr4 5v5 Format

A large, rare flightless bird symbolising emergence.

Chosen to represent growth in moving, emerging from Kākāpō and being seen.  Although this bird is flightless, we are steading ourselves for flight.

Kotare (Kingfisher) Yr5 6v6 Format

Symbolises freedom, courage, adventure and balance.

Chosen for this age group as they will gain their wings in flight.  They will gain more freedom on court, gain the courage to spread their wings and become adventurous with positions and learning new roles.  While keeping balance with their teammates.

Kōtuku (White Heron) Yr6 7v7 Format

Symbol of things both beautiful and rare.

Chosen more for the rare and uniqueness of this age group.  Not only will they be learning a new way of play but also finding the position they prefer and adding their beautiful and rare personality to it.

Phoenix Yr7/Yr8 7v7 Format

Symbolising hope, renewal, rebirth, solitude and grace.  Gives hope and urges us to fight on to keep up our spirit.

Chosen for the intermediate age group as tamariki are reborn and leave the junior section and enter competition mode.  We will at times feel we are in solitude and can not make sense of the outside world, but we can make sense of our game and how we play.  We can only hope for the best and play with style and grace.

Pōuakai (Haast Eagle) Yr9-Yr13 Junior Collegiate

Bird of prey ‘Old glutton’. Monstrous mythical eagle.  The hunter of all!

Chosen as this magnificent bird hunted all living things.  This age group become the hunters instead of the hunted.  They stalk the ball and make no apologies for doing their job

Ēkara (Haast Eagle) Yr9-Yr13 Senior Collegiate

Bird of prey with keen vision and powerful flight.

Chosen as it is a magnificent bird, but this stage for our young ladies is their keen vision on and off the court.  Not only for their team but all that are around them.  Their powerful flight allows them the pave the way for future players and to empower the up and coming.
