The Northern Region Rugby Council is made up of the ten Provincial Rugby Unions (PU) situated between Cape Reinga and Lake Taupo, from Mount Taranaki and over to the East Coast, namely Northland, North Harbour, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waikato, Thames Valley, Bay of Plenty, Ngati Porou East Coast, King Country and Taranaki.

The purpose of the Northern Region Rugby Council is to administer and foster amateur representative rugby union in the Northern Region with meaningful and well-administered competitions that develop aspiring youth and senior players from the age of 15 (Under 16 grades).

The grades in which rugby is played is:

  • Development Women

  • U19 Men

  • Divisional Men

  • U85Kg Men

  • U18 Boys

  • U18 Girls

  • U16 Boys

  • U16 Girls


The Northern Region 15-aside representative rugby season typically runs from early August to late September. A Sevens tournament is held in late November.


The Northern Region Rugby Council is made up of one or two representatives from each of the ten PU’s from their operations and game development staff, a referees’ representative/appointment co-ordinator, representatives from each of the Northern Region Super Rugby franchises – Blues and Chiefs, and representatives from PU secondary schools rugby committees of the various PU’s.


The Northern Region Rugby Council is an incorporated society and receives funding from NZ Rugby in the form of an annual grant to distribute to the PU’s to operate their teams.
