New Zealand Sikh Sports Complex Takanini

Our History

Auckland’s first gurdwara, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sikh Sangat opened on Princes Street near Otahuhu town centre in 1986. Under the management of the New Zealand Sikh Society Auckland, formed on 6 June 1982, now the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand, the Otahuhu Gurdwara and Sikh community flourished, the community soon outgrew this site, creating a demand for a larger community space.

With the guidance of an advisory committee, formed in 2001, the New Zealand Sikh Society Auckland purchased 8.6 acres of land on Takanini School Road and laid the foundation stone for a new gurdwara on 11 August 2002. Sports Ground History

Supreme Sikh Society New Zealand works together with the community, people and teams all across the nation towards one common vision and goal. We have successfully completed some big projects for the community during past few years like Sikh Heritage School, Childz Choice Preschool and international level sports fields for the community.

This 8.6 acres of land was once a farm, full of clay and rocks. Members of the Sikh Community helped transform this land into a flat usable surface, by hand picking all the rocks. By 13th March 2005, the sports field hosted its first tournament, which included the then popular sports of Kabaddi, Football, Volleyball & Tug of War. With the growing population of South Auckland and increasing interest in other sports. It was decided that we need to rebuild this land of grass into a World-class facility.

The Sports complex has the following :

  • Natural Grass Kabaddi Field
  • Football Field
  • Hockey Field
  • 4x 100m Sprint tracks
  • Netball Court
  • Basketball Court
  • 2x Cricket Nets
  • Changing Rooms
  • Cafe

The NZ Sikh Sports Complex required time, investment and application of the gifts the waheguru has given to each of us.
